| Aloha Friend ~
So, I am on the plane in the middle seat in the back - Frankfurt bound - after getting kicked out of INDIA (story continued from my last email)... I started talking to the chap sitting next to me, and we discovered that he was the ex-boyfriend of a very dear friend who recently got married and moved to Barcelona. He expressed his grave concern that she was in a really bad situation, reporting that she was depressed and being abused by her new husband. I started to feel like her life could be in danger, and I promised him that I would call her as soon as possible. As I sat on that plane, absorbing all the crazy circumstances, I meditated and prayed. The whole trip was being restructured so I could help my friend. I needed to meet her face to face and ensure she had support to return to the US. After spending a few days with cousins in Mainz, Germany, to celebrate the New Year, I purchased my flight to Spain. I landed in Barcelona on Three King's Day with an invitation to stay with my friend and her new husband. At first, things seemed normal. We went out to eat and shop. His family had us all together for a celebration. I ate churros with hot cocoa and got a stomach ache. On day three, just she and I went on a trip to ride horses and get paella in a beautiful village by the sea, surrounded by rolling hills. That day, things became clear. She had hidden bruises under her winter clothes. Her usually light and happy energy, which I had known for a decade, had been damaged since the wedding I had attended just six months earlier. She acted like a kept animal -- the trauma was palpable. I comforted her. She agreed it was time to "return to California on a 2-week vacation because she missed her parents." Right before I boarded my flight back to California, I confronted him about my concerns for her well-being, and I told him I wasn't afraid to report what I saw. A week and a half later, she was home - for good. The marriage was annulled. And I never did try to go back to India! My takeaways from this experience solidified the following insights: The outer world AND our inner compass are guiding us at all times. There is often a higher reason when something doesn't go as planned. Creative solutions are available for every problem or challenge. Sometimes, we have to swallow our pride to do what is right. Just a little courage is needed to make a beneficial pivot. One small move will usually part the seas. We always have visible and invisible support - especially when we ask for help.
