Happy New Year!

The most relaxed person in the room, is the one who holds all the power - Elizabeth Gilbert

Hi Friend, wishing you a very Happy New Year and may you have a great start to 2023!

I've always said that any new beginning is a great time to set new goals and affirmations. So, just like the previous years, I've put together some resources to help you do that.

2 ESSENTIAL HABITS TO BUILD THIS YEAR

GET SOME SUN

Natural light is one of the most effective ways to balance our circadian rhythm. It is also excellent for our mental health, and cognitive skills. Morning sun can also help in weight management as early morning light exposure is associated with lower BMIs. This is because light influences both body fat storage and appetite regulating hormones. More importantly, it helps you feel good. Even 10 mins of morning light can lift your mood and help you feel happier.

KEEP A PLANNER / JOURNAL

Getting a planner is a very effective stress management strategy. And everyone can benefit from having a planner - you just need to find one that suits your personality and temperament.

A planner can help you be more focussed so you don't dissipate your energy in multiple activities. It can help you break status quo and bring about significant changes / transformations in life. Or it can help you prioritise self-care and moderation and thereby prevent a burnout. Find a list of my recommended planners in this article .

CHASING PERFECTION

Perfection is truly the enemy of all action and it is an ever increasing evil of modern society. Thanks to social media which can give the impression of other people living perfect lives, with ever lasting happiness. I came across this reel where Professor Brené Brown succinctly explains the problem with Perfectionism - check it out here.

2 BOOKS I RECOMMEND

MINDFULNESS - ELLEN J LANGER

This book defines mindfulness from a scientists perspective and I love the structured, relatable and honest approach it takes. This is a highly thought provoking book and suitable for all readers, even if you're completely new to the concept of meditation or mindful living. Get this book here.

BREATH - JAMES NESTOR

The book gives you a good overview of how breathing can help with overall health. It is well written, gives good context and keeps you interested. If you've ever wondered or doubted what role Pranayama practices can play in your life, this book will introduce you to some of them. While it is written with a western perspective, and does not bring in the nuances of breath like it is understood in Asian traditions, it is still a good read for everyone. Get this book here.

Note - Both books I have recommended today are written by western authors on eastern subjects. First one is written by a scientist carefully researching her subject, the second one is written by a journalist. Both have excellent subject matter, but I would like to add that I found Mindfulness more wholesome and enriching as compared to Breath which focussed more on the physicality of breathing.
