Subject: Swami Vivekanda on success

Hi Friend,

There's a lot to be said for focus. If you end up starting more than you finish, you feel twisted and rotten inside - like there's tons of work crashing down upon you, because there is.

I would know, because I've done this way too often.

I used to say "yes" to waaaaay too many things - and truth be told, I'm still learning how to say no.

It's frustrating and self-conflicting because you want to be able to "do it all". I think that's pretty common amongst the entrepreneurial and writing types, from what friends have told me.

And it's for this very reason that Swami Vivekanda's words are perfectly applicable:

"Take up one idea. Make that idea your life--think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success."

From my own experience, if I flood my brain with too many ideas, I get way too stressed out. I worry about not having enough time to complete them all, and then I get sidetracked from actually finishing even one task.

What I have learned is "done is better than perfect", and actually getting to complete one thing is far better than wishing you had the time to do 10 things.

Decide what that one thing is for you for the day, the week, and the month. Then, write it down within these timelines - yes, on physical paper - and place it prominently on your desk. Now, you'll have a physical reminder before you do any work. And remember - just one idea!

To your grandest writing dreams,
Brad
