The CDC Eviction Moratorium Is Expiring! For almost 11 months it has been as simple as a tenant presenting a form claiming they have been affected by COVID, and we could take no collection action against their non-payment of rent. Thanks to the Supreme Court of the USA this order, from a federal department, was finally struck down as unlawful last month.
Our President confirmed on Thursday that the order must end on July 31st and blamed the Supreme Court. Shortly after that, the President went to work with members of his party to try and create legislation that would prevent evictions through the end of this year. Such a law will hopefully not have a high likelihood of passing both houses of Congress. There is still a chance though that we will be discussing this proposed legislation over the next few weeks.
If you have a strong opinion on this issue, it is important for you to contact your federal representatives in the US House and Senate and share how these moratoriums affect housing providers. In a time where finding affordable housing is a significant issue, federal legislation permitting tenants to not pay rent will create issues that are not going to contribute to a positive solution.
We try and avoid opinions here but we do think you need to know. Please follow this issue in the news over the next few weeks. If it starts to gain momentum, we know our owners are going to want to have a voice!
All the best!
