Once every four years we get to have a 29th of February! So, how cool is it that we get to send our newsletter on Sat Feb 29..Wow!!
We have the Romans to blame for this event. Not Hallmark. The reason we only have 29 days in February, every four years, has alot to do with the wisdom of Julius Caesar and his Roman calendar. Even back then, the thinkers of the day figured out that in order to account for the extra quarter of a day it takes the Earth to circle the Sun, an extra full day had to be placed in the calendar every four years. Pretty impressive that they figured this out without the help of the internet! Think about that!
Leap year occurs on years divisible by four..except if divisible by 100..but not 400. Who came up with that? The Romans of course. (and give the Pop his due because he did his own tweeking and adds the 400 exception). So, this explains why we had a Leap Year in 2000 in case you remember.
If you are a woman and have a significant other, today is the day to honor tradition and propose your marriage. This is partly why some people also call Leap Day Sadie Hawkins day. But guess what...that is sort of an urban legend also.
So, whatever you want to make of it, celebrate a little this unusual calendar event. We wont see it again until 2024..unless somehow 100 or 400 can divide into that 2024.
