Hola Friend,
Since our last newsletter, which detailed the unfortunate blackout in Cuba, the island has faced additional severe trials. Recently, a Category 3 hurricane swept through our cherished communities, followed closely by a 6.8-magnitude earthquake. These back-to-back natural disasters have tested the resilience of the Cuban people yet again, deepening the challenges they face daily.
As Black Friday approaches, bringing with it the usual flurry of consumer activity, these events prompt us to reflect on what truly matters. Why do we participate in Black Friday? Is it for the thrill of the deal, the joy of shopping, or perhaps a fear of missing out?
Reflecting on Our Values
Here at Simply Cuba Tours, founded by myself, Orsolya, and my partner Yoanis, we embrace a rhythm that beats to sustainable travel and mindful living - you have heard me talk about the importance of travelling with an open heart, supporting the communities, raising awareness about the importance of protecting the birds and maybe even growing our own vegies. Black Friday’s emphasis on mass consumerism clashes with our core values—values that guide how we operate and live.
The Pressure on Small Businesses
In the face of Black Friday, small businesses, including ours, are frequently pressured to lower their prices significantly, this often leads to sacrificing their values and the quality of their offerings. Authentic brands typically steer clear of these sales, especially as they understand that many of these perceived discounts are merely marketing strategies designed to captivate. |
