Subject: Amidst Darkness, the Resilience of Cuba Shines Bright

The story of the remarkable resilience and ingenuity of Cuban people

Hola Friend,

As night falls once again on Cuba, an all too familiar darkness envelops the streets. This isn't just the result of a faltering grid, but a complex ballet of geopolitical tensions and enduring sanctions. Yet, even in these trying times, the indomitable spirit of the Cuban people shines through, illuminating the strength and ingenuity required to navigate life under such constraints.

The power outages, a recurrent episode in the lives of many Cubans, present more than just a logistical nightmare—they reveal a profound legacy of resilience and unity. My husband, who grew up on this resilient island, describes Cuba as possessing a kind of stoic 'curse'. Nevertheless, he smiles as he recounts the creativity and camaraderie that blossom from adversity.

From the outskirts of Havana to the more remote corners of the island, families and neighbors band together, sharing resources and solutions. The Cuban knack for improvisation turns a blackout into a community gathering. Kerosene stoves and charcoal become the day's heroes, essential for cooking communal meals that sustain both body and spirit. Car and tractor batteries find new life powering cell phones and small radios, keeping the lines of communication open and vibrant.

In these gatherings, under the soft glow of makeshift lighting, stories are shared, plans are made, and laughs echo through the streets—a testament to the Cuban way of maintaining morale and hope, even in the darkest times. Visitors to the island often express awe at this collective resilience, finding profound life lessons in the resourcefulness displayed.

One traveler recounted, "If there's one thing you learn quickly here, it's that there's a solution to every problem. And often, that solution is crafted not by one, but by many hands coming together." Another quipped, reflecting on the joys found in simple pleasures, "Rum tastes better warm anyway—even better shared among new friends under the stars."

This is the Cuban way—unyielding, spirited, and eternally hopeful. In Cuba, the human spirit, fueled by community and ingenuity, rises above the immediate challenge of darkness. Here, in the literal and metaphorical shadows, the collective will to thrive crafts light from the night itself.

As we share these stories, we are reminded of the precious power of community and the infinite capacity of human ingenuity. The resilience of the Cuban people isn't just a beacon of hope for those of us with ties to the island; it's a universal tale of triumph against the odds.

Thank you for standing with us, for embracing these stories of endurance and creativity, and for celebrating the spirit that defines Cuba.

Cuidate mucho,

Orsolya & Yoanis
