Subject: Open for Business!

Dear Friend,

As you can see from the makeshift sign, we are open for business!

I am excited to share that Five Talents in partnership with the Episcopal Church of South Sudan and Mother’s Union, is launching a new microenterprise program in Wandi, South Sudan.

Wandi has experienced hardship. The area was under forceful occupation, which meant that local people were subjected to seizure of property, animals, and homes. And tragically, trauma and gender-based violence during this time was commonly practiced.

There is a 90% illiteracy rate in rural areas of this region, with severely limited numbers of schools. There are no Savings Group promoters or Microfinance Institutions working in the area.  There is only one bank in the nearest commercial center, which is several hours drive away.

So why do I joyfully celebrate a humble poster in light of these circumstances?

Because I am reminded of a time when Jesus saw a crowd of 5,000 and told his disciple “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”  To which his disciple responded, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” I think you know the rest of the story.

I hope you will join me in celebrating this humble yet beautiful sign and pray that God multiplies our efforts in Wandi to help bring hope and flourishing.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Elizabeth Kim Ha
