Subject: It Changed Everything

Dear Friend,

As many of you know, the outbreak of war has continued to ravage Sudan since the fighting erupted in April. As of July 31, an estimated 202,263 people were registered crossing from Sudan into South Sudan. Sadly, a significant portion of these refugees are South Sudanese that previously fled violence to go to Sudan and now are returning home. Trauma, displacement, food insecurity, and exposure to disease - these are grim realities for many of the already burdened communities in South Sudan.

Despite these challenges, we are grateful that our Literacy and Savings Groups can continue to not only provide education and economic opportunities, but also crucial trauma healing amidst ongoing conflict.

And yet, I am humbled by the stories of our program participants that emerge, particularly, one of a single mother named Lyla, raising four sons.

Lyla used to tend a herd of goats for sustenance and income. Her goats were stolen during the conflict, leaving her family without food or money for medical needs. Lyla became deeply resentful and angry towards her community. However, joining a Literacy Group changed everything. Their support and being able to study the Bible, helped her find forgiveness.

“It really helped me to forgive. I learned that Christ came and died on the cross for our sins.  This, and my group facilitator, helped me to become strong.”

Lyla's Literacy Group evolved into a Savings Group, empowering members to save together, invest in each others’ small businesses, and improve their lives. Her group continues to be a lifeline of support. “My faith in my community grew stronger as my Group members helped me, and each other…I advocate for forgiveness, so that others in my community will also find peace.”

When asked about her hopes for the future, she says, “My hopes are that this program will continue to inspire others. My thanks goes to God, and Five Talents…May God bless them.”

Friend, thank you for being a lifeline. Because of your partnership, Lyla has been able to transform her life. Women and men enter our programs with a desire to learn to read, or to start a business. They not only find freedom from financial poverty, but also find freedom from an impoverished spirit.

Looking ahead, Five Talents wants to reach 12,000 new participants in countries like South Sudan, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. But we can not do it without you. Will you help us serve those in most need in the hardest to reach places?

Please consider a gift today. It will make all the difference.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Elizabeth Kim Ha
