Subject: Friend, Flooding and more in Renk

Dear friend,

In the northeast corner of South Sudan is the region of Renk, home to one of our newest programs. When asked what the major challenges were for members of the program, Ajak, our partner Program Manager said, “The outcomes were greatly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, heavy rainfall this year leading to flooding, food insecurity, and fear of attack from rebel groups.”

Flooding from the River Nile, as you can see from the photo of Ajak, meant that many Literacy Centers became inaccessible with devastation caused to homes, livelihoods and lives.

Our partners are trusted and respected in the communities we work in, and they have been able to direct members to resources available in the area.

In recent years, there has been growing hostility towards international NGOs, whom some see as elitist and not hiring local people. Five Talents’ partnership with local churches means that our programs are locally led, owned and governed. The program leaders are from the communities in which Literacy Groups and Savings Groups are established. Therefore, our work and partners are unaffected by any opposition or violence as faced by international NGOs. And that allows these leaders to help build resiliency where it is needed most.

Until next week,
