Subject: 25 Mighty Widows

“Life is full of gains and losses, joys and sorrows, ups and downs—but we do not have to live it alone. We want to drink our cup together and thus celebrate the truth that the wounds of our individual lives, which seem intolerable when lived alone, become sources of healing when we live them as part of a fellowship of mutual care.”  - Henri Nouwen

Dear Friend,

Earlier this year, I traveled to Mombasa, Kenya. The absolute highlight of the trip was visiting one of our Saving Groups that had been newly formed and was composed of 25 widows. They were proud to share that the group recently had two new members join.

When I asked the newest member why she decided to join, she told me, "It's because of love. I wanted to be part of the group because it's clear that everyone loves one another. They are all working toward helping one another in their hardships."

Our Savings Groups provide a path toward economic empowerment, which of course is critical for those living in extreme poverty. Our Groups, however, also provide something equally as important- the fellowship of mutual care.

As one of my favorite writers, Henri Nouwen, articulated while the individual wounds of life are intolerable, in community something beautiful and transformational happens. From these widows, I saw a flourishing of spirit despite the deep grief of losing a spouse, and despite the overwhelming challenges of poverty.

Please join me in praying for this mighty band of widows in Mombasa. As always, thank you for walking alongside those we serve.

With heartfelt gratitude,
