Subject: Your #1 question + "miracle grow for the brain"

Hi Friend,

Happy Sunday!

This week I decided to tackle one of the most common questions I get: what's the problem with vegetable oil? It's not part of the mainstream conversation on health and nutrition, but I think it should be.

I came across the work of Dr. Cate Shanahan several years ago and really enjoyed her books, Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food and Food Rules: A Doctor's Guide to Healthy Eating (available on kindle for free!). This is where I first learned about refined seed oils and why they should be avoided. Once this was on my radar, I started to notice a trend: nearly every bio-hacker, functional medicine doctor, nutrition-focused wellness expert, and brain health expert I've come across recommends avoiding these oils as well. Dave Asprey, the entrepreneur bio-hacker behind Bulletproof has famously said he'd "rather smoke a cigarette than eat vegetable oil."

New blog post:

So hopefully you're interested in learning more! Please check out my full post on this topic. It also includes a list of the oils I use (liberally) and tips for avoiding vegetable oils.

This post was a big undertaking, so no new recipes this week. I promise to share something easy and yummy next week!

A podcast I liked:
Why Neuroscientists Love Running, a mini episode from Dr. Mark Hyman's podcast (also on Instagram here). Several highlights:
  • BDNF (Brain-derived neurotrophic factor): "is like miracle grow for the brain" and running is the fastest way to increase BDNF levels. It increases neuroplasrticity (formerly believed to only be possible for children's brains!) and develops new brain cells. So... "You're not stuck with the brain you have." Exercise is one of the best things you can do to improve brain function and brain health.
  • Having a healthy gut microbiome can can boost your immune system and can also help reduce inflammation across the body.
  • New research: brain cells don't age; blood vessels age. So, anything that damages your blood vessels damages your brain.
  • People who play racket sports live the longest--by almost 10 years(!) - check out the findings from the study (the key: it's physical, and social!).

Bringing it all together:
Do these takeaways remind you of the talk on Alzheimer's I shared a few months back? Or the New York Times article I shared on Chronic Inflammation? Or the links to Inflammation that are referenced throughout my post on the Problem with Vegetable Oils? It's all so interconnected!

The mini podcast mentions that "the root of most chronic illnesses we see today is Inflammation and immune dis-regulation" But -- the good news!? "Inflammation is the unifying common pathway that we can manage." It's a very lifestyle-driven issue and making better decisions puts you in the driver's seat of your own health. I really believe that small choices and small changes can add up, and they matter! My hope is for us all to feel very empowered by this information.
