Subject: What's the deal with inflammation?

Hi Friend,

Happy New Year! This week's newsletter's going out later than usual after a busy travel day and a long list of chores at home. #backtoreality. I know I could skip a week or push out a day, but I really love putting this together and receiving your replies!

2020 intentions, goals, & actions:
In last week's newsletter, I talked about intentions and the power of writing out goals.  I also posted a very simple template (2nd image in the post) that I used this year.

I've done a lot of these exercises for work, but it was the first time I really sat down to do it for my personal life (and Kaleifornian!). I planted the seed with my husband a couple weeks ago and it was fun to use our daily walks as a time to talk and brainstorm before putting pen to paper this week. We ended up having so much fun doing it and I feel really good about what we came up with. I highly recommend it!

New on the blog:
Nothing this week! But I'm working on a post I'm really excited about. Final name TBD, but it's going to be my must-haves for a stocked kitchen + a downloadable shopping list. Clean eating is a key pillar of a healthy lifestyle, and I believe that home cooking is a critical element. That's why a big goal of mine is to help make home cooking easy, accessible, and delicious. That starts with a well-stocked kitchen, and we'll layer in things like weekly meal plans and more healthy recipes along the way. Does that sound helpful?

Throughout my research, a key takeaway has been that inflammation is at the root of almost every disease. My friend, Elizabeth, sent me this article from The New York Times, which I wanted to pass along. Inflammation is a bit of a buzz word, and we all know "anti-inflammatory" is good, but perhaps not why exactly. Here're a few highlights in case you don't have time to read the whole thing:
  • Chronic inflammation is "a kind of low-grade irritant that can undermine the well-being of virtually every bodily system." And it can be caused by any number of things (i.e. stress, certain foods, lack of sleep).
  • Chronic inflammation is "a universal condition that is a major contributor to a wide range of common health-robbing ailments, from heart disease, diabetes and cancer to arthritis, depression and Alzheimer’s disease." (**As I mentioned on 11/23: check out the book Genius Foods or this podcast for more on the connection to Alzheimer's.**)
  • "Recent studies have identified measures...that can minimize the potency of chronic inflammation... and possibly even reverse its progression." Those measures are: "Adopt a wholesome diet, get regular exercise, avoid or reduce excess weight, get adequate quality sleep, minimize stress and don’t smoke."
The article isn't long, so I recommend checking it out if you have a few minutes.

Thank you for reading and for sharing your precious time with me! If you know someone who'd enjoy this content, I'd really appreciate you sharing it. And just hit "reply" to this message if you want to get in touch!

Be well,
Jess
