Subject: What unites us--and why I think that's important right now

Hi Friend,

What a week. I hope you're hanging in there. Before diving in to this week's updates, I wanted to share a little about our Kaleiforian community. So, here's who we are:

This group includes young parents, grandparents (at least one great-grandparent.. hi, Maw Maw!), teachers, small business owners, and team leaders. Several have respiratory issues, newborns, pregnancies, family members undergoing cancer treatment, or children with health conditions that make this a very scary time.

We've had weddings, bridal showers, and memorial services postponed, study abroad programs and family trips canceled, office and school closures. If you're lucky enough to know anyone in their 90s and beyond, you know that it's truly an unprecedented time for us all.

Our circumstances are different, but we're united by an interest in our health and the well-being of our families and communities (among many other things). And we're all navigating unfamiliar territory right now. I'm grateful to have you here--and I just wanted you to know a little more about the special group that you're apart of and the kinds of people you're helping by taking care of yourself right now.

Our status & mindset
We pulled our daughter out of school on Thursday (our governor later closed all schools in the state starting Monday) and have decided to isolate ourselves for the greater good. Even though we don't have underlying conditions, we know this is the best way to slow the spread of the virus. Enough people taking these measures can reduce the burden on the strained healthcare system so the limited resources can be focused on those most at risk during this pandemic. It sounds extreme, because it is an extreme situation - read the articles linked above.

During this time, I'm going to be focused on my two little ones and keeping our family healthy. I'll also do my best to keep Kaleifornian content coming and as relevant as possible. Given limited bandwidth, that will likely be through Instagram / Facebook and this Newsletter rather than long form blog posts. What content would be most helpful? Please let me know how I can best serve you.

Stocking up - groceries
Last week I mentioned that I've been stocking up on essentials as well as healthy, nutrient-dense food. My post on 45 Things to Keep Stocked for Healthy Dinners covers my favorite long shelf-life items. It includes produce, freezer section, as well as condiments, sauces and seasonings that will help you prepare healthy, flavorful food. That post includes links to several recipes and ideas if you need some inspiration.

Since most of us are limiting time in public places, I'm working on a post that covers more items from the produce section that can last a while and get you the most mileage out of your shopping trips. Stay tuned.

What I've been cooking
I adapted a Nom Nom Paleo cauliflower fried rice recipe and it was absolutely delicious. I'll be making it again soon! I posted my version here and step-by-step pics here.
I needed something easy and tasty, so I thawed a jar of my yummy pasta sauce and made a quick meat sauce with some ground turkey. I served the sauce over spaghetti squash, topped with parmesan and fresh mozzarella. More info here
FYI on Dry Farm Wines
After I posted about my Dry Farm Wines* delivery this week (yes, this is also on my list of things to have stocked!), several people pinged me to say they'd also signed up and were loving the wine. I'm so glad to hear that!! I just wanted to let you know that they have wonderful customer service and a 100% happiness promise, which means they'll send you something new if you receive a wine that you don't like. Out of dozens of bottles, I've only done this once, but it's a nice option! And as a reminder: if you're interested in trying out Dry Farm Wines, you can get an extra bottle for $.01 if you purchase through this link. Their wines are all organic or biodynamic, sugar free, low in sulfites, lower in alcohol, and free of dozens of additives and pesticides found in conventional wine.

Thank you reading and I hope you pass this along to someone who could benefit from this information. Please take care of yourself -- and by doing that, our community.

Be well,
Jess
