Why we need to be informed consumers
This post touches on our generation's increased toxic load as a result of changes to our food system and the dramatic uptick in our exposure to synthetic chemicals. This startling piece on the "body burden" of newborns is worth a read if you want to go even deeper.
Water damage and mold prevention
I hope everyone is safe and warm after the record cold temperatures that swept the US last month! Since I know many people are still dealing with the fallout of burst pipes, I wanted to pass along a helpful collection of resource from my friends at Branch Basics: How To Prevent and Minimize Damage From Water Leaks. Mold is a very serious health risk, so it’s important to take precautions and thoroughly remediate any problem areas.
Pesticides in produce - what to buy organic and other tips to reduce exposure
There's a growing body of research that links pesticide exposure to many serious health conditions. Because of this, experts recommend buying organic as much as possible - especially certain items. One of the best resources for informed shopping is the EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce. I also like this Produce Guide from Consumer Reports. Save the produce cheat sheet I created at the bottom of this email for easy reference👇.
I also have a post on Instagram that includes a list of the Dirty Dozen + 4 other plant products I recommend buying organic: raisins (more pesticide residue than ANY of the fresh produce items EWG tested), wine (since grapes are #6 on the Dirty list and most wine tests positive for glyphosate), coffee and tea (both are also highly sprayed crops and tea plants are known for bioaccumulation).
Keep in mind that EWG washes and peels (where applicable, i.e. bananas) all samples before they're tested. These steps reduce some pesticide exposure, but not all. Check out this post for more tips.
