Hi Friend,

Happy Valentine's Day. I hope you're having a great weekend!

The second week of February also happens to be when most people have officially abandoned their New Year's Resolutions, so I wanted to check in to see if there's anything wellness-related you've been focusing on. I've shared a little about one of mine below because I think it's something that we can all benefit from right now. I've also rounded up a couple recent food tips I've posted and a quick new recipe to cure the winter blues!

What I'm focusing on: Mindfulness

There are entire books and courses on this concept, but in short: it starts with being more aware of thoughts and emotions. Being present. I've been struggling with stress and the ups and downs of Covid life, so I'm really trying to pause once in a while and be more deliberate in how I direct my thoughts and respond to everyday stressors.

Quick hacks: turn off as many phone notifications as you can (definitely turn social media and news notifications OFF!). Putting your phone in airplane mode when you're out and about is also helpful.

I also just read two books that are connected to mindfulness, that you might find interesting: Signs: The Secret Language of the Universe by the famous medium, Laura Lynne Jackson (a little out there...but if you're open to this kind of thing, check it out). And I'm just finishing The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson. Mindful parenting strategies which help to foster mindfulness, self-regulation and more in your children (win-win). Next on my list: Essentialism and Breathe: The New Science of a Lost Art. Do you have any other recommendations on this topic?

New Recipe: Mango Salsa

This is not your typical wintery topping, and that's exactly why I've been craving it! Yes, this is great with tacos or some Siete chips, but it's also delicious on grilled chicken or fish. It keeps for a few days in the fridge, so make a big batch and do both! The recipe is loaded with antioxidants and health-promoting nutrients that support heart health, digestion and immunity. Food Tips

  • Mango skin is edible! And good for you! This makes prepping the Mango Salsa recipe a lot easier. Like with all fruit, the skin contains beneficial vitamins and minerals, but it can also retain pesticide residue. Wash well (my all-purpose Branch Basics* spray is what I use on produce) and try to opt for organic if you're going to eat the skin.

  • Hard boiled eggs: I like making a big batch at the start of the week. It's a quick high quality protein that you can have for breakfast, a snack or salad topping. Side note: I'm a big fan of protein and fat in the morning over grains or anything sweet. Studies like this one demonstrate that eggs in the morning improve satiety and cause people to eat fewer calories later in the day compared to a carbohydrate-based breakfast that's equal in calories. It's also better for blood sugar and insulin stability.
