Hi Friend,

Happy Sunday! I hope you're staying healthy and that you had a nice week with some time outdoors. The big news in our household was that our daughter learned how to ride her "pedal bike" a few days ago. We're all pretty tickled about it! I'm excited for her to join us on longer rides someday and my husband is excited to have the kiddie trailer lightened up! :)

Here are a few healthy living updates from this week and resources I wanted to share:

Matcha Love

Green Tea Matcha

I recently did a post about tea that I wanted to elaborate on. I've always loved tea, and I started drinking matcha green tea because I was into the health benefits and enjoyed the creamy flavor (I usually make a latte with nut milk). I've since learned that matcha is also believed to provide calm energy, enhanced focus and clarity. No wonder it became my go-to in the afternoons at work when I was a new mom! I've been hooked ever since.

As a big tea drinker, I felt compelled to learn more about it… and I discovered some unpleasant information...

Unfortunately, tea can be a brew of pesticides and other toxins:

  • The latest research conducted by scientists in Canada revealed that teabags are releasing billions of microplastics in every cup.

  • Farms in Japan (where many teas are grown) are also located very close to each other, so ‘pesticide drift’ is a huge problem. Chemical pesticides and herbicides used on one farm can get carried by wind to adjacent farms.

Why this matters:

It's always wise to avoid toxins whenever possible, but I feel that it's especially important when it comes to anything you use or consume regularly--and tea is a daily habit for many of us.

How you can avoid toxin exposure:

Drink a pure loose leaf tea or matcha! Unlike bagged tea, which requires steeping, matcha is a powder derived from ground up tea leaves. This eliminates the risk of consuming microplastics released from teabags.

But not all matcha is created equal...Turns out, most of the highest ceremonial grade matcha is not organic, and organic matcha is rarely the highest grade. This is why I was so excited to find Pique* teas. Their Sun Goddess Matcha is the world's PUREST Ceremonial Grade matcha. And the FIRST matcha to Quadruple Toxin Screen for: Heavy Metals, Fluoride, Pesticides & Radioactive Isotopes.

Other perks of Pique matcha:

  • Their matcha comes from a tea farm located in Kagoshima, which neighbors Okinawa, a ‘Blue Zone’ linked to human longevity.

  • It is also the FURTHEST possible spot from Fukushima's radioactive and industrial pollution.

  • Pique’s matcha leaves are also shaded up to 35% longer than other leaves, which creates a much higher level of l-theanine, aka nature's chill pill. It’s the ingredient in matcha that relaxes you while giving you calm, focused energy. This also increases the creamy "umami" flavor of their matcha.

Special discount:

After being a self-appointed brand ambassador (lol), I'm Pique's newest official partner!  That's only something I do after I've done my research and been a repeat, full-paying customer myself. I'm really excited to be aligned with this high quality brand with shared values! And the best part is that I've been able to secure discounted pricing and free shipping if you'd like to try Pique Matcha. Let me know what you think if you give it a try!

This Week's Health Hack

Health Hack: Chew Your Food

I like the saying: your mouth has teeth; your stomach does not. That's the only way you're going to properly absorb the vitamins and nutrients in your food. It also helps with gut health and alleviates bloating for many people.

The golden rule is to chew each bite 32 times, which helps break food down, activates important digestive enzymes, and enhances mindfulness while eating. I'm not one for counting my chews, so I really liked this Ayurvedic expert's advice: "food should be soup before you swallow.”

Cooking Tip: Master a Method

Braised Chicken with Moroccan Spices

This is a cooking mindset shift that I really believe in: focus on learning a couple of healthy cooking methods rather than just following recipes. This will get you hundreds of meals, more flexibility with ingredients, and probably some extra confidence in the kitchen. It can also reduce stress and make the whole process more enjoyable.

I've followed this technique for braised chicken thighs more times than I can count, but I'm still not bored! This week I did a braised take on my Moroccan chicken recipe that was delicious! See my post for more examples.

In case you missed it, here are my best tips and tricks for roasting veggies -- another favorite method I use all the time. The possibilities are endless!

That's it for this week. Thank you so much for reading! Wishing you a safe and healthy week ahead.

Be well,

Jess XO
