Subject: Kaleifornian weekly recap

Hi Friend,

I hope you're enjoying the holiday weekend! This is going out a little later than usual because I'm on a family trip in Savannah. We came here to escape the cold of Chicago and explore a new city--it's been great! As a Californian, I've spent very little time in the South, and we're taking advantage of our new location to visit places that are far from the West Coast. A short plane ride is also a plus since we have two little ones. We'd also like to visit Charleston and Montreal. Any other suggestions for an easy trip from Chicago? Warm in the winter is a plus!

New recipe post this week:

Veggie-Loaded Pork Stir Fry with Basil, Ginger & Garlic
This recipe is loaded with nutritious veggies, herbs, and spices, but the pork brings in some protein, fat and a rich flavor that ties it all together so well. (Learn why I love cooking with ginger and cabbage / cruciferous vegetables). Something else I like about this stir fry: ground pork saves me from handling raw meat (not a fan of that whole process)! Oh, and it’s a one-pan meal, gluten free, soy-free, Whole30, Keto, and Paleo compliant! All the things. :)

I've made this twice in the past three weeks and I hope you love it too! There's a spot at the bottom of the page to leave a comment or rate the recipe - please let me know what you think!

Tips for reducing blue light at night:
As I mentioned on Instagram this week, I'm a big fan of amber lighting in the evening. It's easier on your eyes and less disruptive for melatonin production and your circadian rhythm. If sleep wasn’t important enough, keep in mind that melatonin is also an antioxidant that protects against cancer . There’s a lot of emerging research linking artificial light exposure at night to disease in adults and children, so I think this is definitely something to be mindful about. It's also very easy to address. Aside from black-out curtains and no nightlights, here's what we do:
  • Use amber light bulbs for evening lighting. I usually turn off the bright overheads at sundown and we switch over to our lights with amber bulbs when we sit down for dinner each night. We use them in bedroom lamps as well. I have links to the bulbs we use in the Household section of my Favorites page.
  • Adjust devices to automatically tone down blue light in the evenings. Apple products call this feature Night Shift and it takes 30 seconds to set up. It’s available on most phones, tablets, and PCs that I’ve come across. For nighttime reading on e-readers, I like to use the blue light filter + the black background setting, which cuts down the brightness even more.
I hope this info is helpful! Thank you for your precious time. If you know someone who'd enjoy this content, please forward along or tag them on an Instagram post. I appreciate these shares SO much.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Be well,
Jess
