Hi Friend,

Happy October - I hope this message finds you well! In traditional practices like Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, the shift in seasons is recognized as a special time to reflect and recalibrate. Even if you don't believe in the energy side of things, I think there's some real wisdom here.  Each season (at least in most parts of the world), there are environmental changes that impact our bodies, our moods, and how we live, including: sunlight exposure, the amount of time we spend outdoors, how we eat (what's in season, fresh foods vs. warm foods, etc.), our skin, and more. I think it helps to recognize these shifts and recalibrate as needed. Especially this year!

Questions for you: Do you have certain rituals that you follow with the changing seasons? Have you come across creative ways to keep activities outdoors as the weather cools off? I'd love to hear from you!

Avocado Oil-gate

This week on Instagram I shared a UC Davis study about avocado oil that garnered a lot of questions and comments. The headline: in the group of 22 imported and domestic brands, 82 percent of avocado oils tested were rancid or mixed with other cheap, highly inflammatory oils such as soy. "Only two brands produced samples that were pure and non-oxidized. Those were Chosen Foods and Marianne’s Avocado Oil." In the virgin category, "CalPure was pure and fresher than the other samples in the same grade."

I reached out to several brands who produce or use avocado oil in their products. Here's a summary of what I learned:

  • Chosen Foods: One of two companies to pass the study's testing showing samples that were pure and non-oxidized. Since 2011, they’ve consistently tested their oils "to ensure purity – never cutting corners." With the help of UCD, they hope to encourage governing bodies to begin implementing regulations for the avocado oil industry.

  • Siete Foods: All of their avocado oil is tested at third party labs that are accredited and specialize in botanical adulteration. Results have come back without any other oils in them.

  • Primal Kitchen Foods: "Our internal food science specialists have a number of issues with the study, but that being said our avocado oil peroxide value consistently indicates (via third party testing) high-quality, non-rancid oil... Additionally, Primal Kitchen avocado oil undergoes significant testing at each phase of production to ensure quality and purity." More info on their site here. I asked if they'd elaborate on the "issues with the study," but they didn't reply.

  • Sir Kensington's: They've worked with the current leading avocado oil research scientist, Dr. Selina Wang from UC Davis to conduct avocado oil purity testing... "Our avocado oil fell within range for all [key] attributes, leading Dr. Wang to conclude that our avocado oil is pure. Additionally, we are looking into conducting additional purity testing on a more regular basis moving forward." They also outlined several steps they take to limit oxidation before, during, and after the production of the mayonnaise.

The study has certainly brought more scrutiny to the industry, and more regulation is likely on the way. In the meantime, you can check out the last section of the write-up for Consumer Tips.

Recipes!

Green beans with shallots and almonds

Get the details for this yummy Green Beans side dish. It's always great on its own (completely vegetarian), but I love making it as part of a one-pan meal with something like chicken thighs, lamb rib chops, or pork chops for extra flavor.

If you have a chance to make it, I'd love to know what you think!

Chia and blueberry pudding

I've been making this Chia and Blueberry Pudding that's packed with other superfoods like hemp hearts and ground flax seeds. My children love it... it's right up there with these Cinnamon Raisin Balls (a few of the same ingredients), but less of a production.

It's really simple, clean, and delicious. Let me know if you try it!

Tip: Stainless Steel for Bottles & Toddler Cups

If you have young children (now or in your future), check out my post with 4 reasons to choose stainless steel over plastic bottles and sippy cups. This article goes into some of the issues with BPA. I'd also add that the recommendation to look for BPA-free is not enough because BPA is simply replaced with a bisphenol that's likely just as hazardous. Hence the recommendation to avoid plastics altogether. Another serious concern with plastic: phthalates.

My favorite baby bottles, toddler cups and more are linked in the Baby / Kids section of my Favorites* page (I'm sorry that page takes a few seconds to load.... I'm working on it!).

As always, thank you so much for reading! Wishing you a safe and healthy week ahead.

Be Well,

Jess XO
