| | LAST WEEK AT THE CHAPEL Once again, we were graced with beautiful weather for our Sunday service. After starting the day with appreciation for our environment, one another, and our smiling guests from across the US, Crow Capps took us into a spontaneous meditation with his soul-touching music. | | Then, with the aid of a couple of thought-provoking short videos and Barbara Beckham's real-life examples, we moved into an open, honest, and compassionate (yes, compassionate) look at stereotypes and implicit bias. (Implicit bias is a form of bias that occurs automatically and unintentionally that nevertheless affects judgments, decisions, and behaviors.) | | To encourage open communication, we don't record Discussion Sundays so you can't check it out on the website, but know that we covered a lot of territory – the nature and source of bias – how it appears in our lives and society both in obvious and sometimes silent ways. Through the discussion, we were each encouraged (and perhaps emboldened) to look at our own lives and find the places where bias currently exists so that instead of operating from bias, we can truly choose how we interact in this life. And best of all, we all left with smiles on our faces. "Thank You" Crow and Barbara. | | DEATH CAFE Sunday afternoon Jan Brewer hosted the first of three planned Death Cafes at Wayfarers. Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives, or themes (not a grief support or counseling session) with the intent of increasing awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives. After a brief introduction by Jan and an explanation of what the Death Cafe is and isn't, members of the group shared their thoughts and experiences of many facets of death, dying, grief, and loss in this supportive environment. The next Death Cafe is scheduled for October 11th from 2-4 pm. For more information see www.deathcafe.com or contact Jan Brewer at 510.684.5555. | | THIS SUNDAY AT THE CHAPEL – AUGUST 16th In keeping with the CDC recommendations, safety precautions remain in effect for all gatherings at the chapel including 6' social distancing and wearing masks. (Hand sanitizer and masks are available at the table at the entrance.) In order to ensure the 6' distance between persons of different households, RSVPs are required for Sunday services.
Our own Garnett Nash will speak next Sunday about “Trying to find the way to let it go in all areas of our lives.” Garnett served on our Wayfarers board of directors and has been a past speaker who always speaks from the heart. We look forward to his message. Chris Casses will grace us with his wonderful music. Ruth Henry will be the host. If you plan to attend, please be sure to RSVP by clicking the link below and providing the names and number of people in your party and whether you will be sitting together or separately. Click HERE to RSVP this Sunday service. The videos of the Sunday talks are generally posted on www.wayfarersunity.org within a few days of recording if you are unable to attend or would simply like to revisit a talk. | | FOR THOSE UNABLE TO ATTEND SUNDAY SERVICES While we are happy that our members generally feel safe in our "6' separation", "sanitizer provided", "masks required" environment on the deck, we recognize that some people do not feel safe at this time being in groups of any size. If viewing the Sunday talks is not enough input and connection for you and you would like the participate in Zoom gatherings with other Wayfarers, please contact Ruth Henry at 901.218.4234. | | PRAYER GROUP The Wayfarers Prayer Group is available to hold you, a friend, or loved one in affirmative prayer in time of need. If you wish to receive prayerful support, please contact Mary Brennan at 706.435.7613 or tazz2meg4@gmail.com. | | | | | | THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (from THE DAILY WORD)
“I am calm, peaceful, and relaxed"
Is there something in my life that is making me feel tense? Am I in conflict with someone? It is easy to become so focused on such situations that it can be a challenge to let go. At times like these, it is important to find ways to relax. Yes, I can go into the quiet and center myself on the divine source of peace within me. I can also use an affirmation that I can silently repeat to myself wherever I am, whatever I may be doing. I also pause to care for myself by honoring my feelings If I feel my frustrations start to build, I express my feelings by writing them down or sharing them with a trusted friend or confidant. In caring for myself, I make room to feel calm and relaxed. Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with all of you.
