Come and enjoy tea and cake (a nod to Death Cafe's British origins) and talk openly and confidentially about all things death related.
The session is facilitated by Jan Brewer, M.A., CMT. For further information please contact Jan at (510) 684-5555 and/or visit www.deathcafe.com.
-------------------------------------------
By the way, a pair of glasses was left at the chapel at the last Death Cafe. If these are yours, or you know to whom they belong, be sure to get them when you come! | | | | Boy, we love it when things just HAPPEN! This past Saturday the Board voted to start a capital campaign to purchase an AED for the chapel - something not in the current budget. On Sunday, Jen announced the campaign to cover the cost of a refurbished AED (that amazing device that can save lives by shocking your heart back into rhythm or walk even a novice through performing CPR if necessary). No sooner had the words left her mouth than Roger Mills volunteered to cover the cost of the refurbished AED. Campaign complete!!!! Thank you SOOOOOO MUCH to Roger and Norman for their generous donation. As it turns out, other donors came forward offering additional funds which may allow us to purchase additional first aid supplies, or with a few more contributions, allow us to purchase a new AED with a longer warranty. If you are interested in donating funds towards a new AED and/or auxiliary supplies, please contact Jen Utley at (901) 218.4234 or jenutley@bellsouth.net. | SPIRITUAL COMMUNITY DISCUSSION | This past SUNDAY, Ruth Henry (singing from the deck so as to not share whatever was causing her fever!), got us energized with sing-a-long community songs. Jennifer Utley then facilitated our exciting and very fruitful discussion of what it means to be "community" and how Wayfarers Chapel can better serve our Wayfarers community. (Click to view discussion.) One of the songs we sang together was Bill Wither's Lean On Me. And the following verses figured heavily in our discussions. Please swallow your pride, Discussion turned into action and we are expanding our services by adding new resources and activities. WAYFARERS MEDICAL DEVICE RESOURCE LIST Medical equipment is one of those things that when you need it, you need it! And sometimes the equipment is tough on the budget - especially for something you may only need for a short period of time - and/or it is challenging to find the items locally. To help make it easier for folks, we are creating a list of equipment that is freely available from various Wayfarers. If you have medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, walking boots, crutches, bedside toilets, etc. that you are willing to loan (or even give) to other Wayfarers in need, please contact Barbara Beckham at apinklady@att.net. Please include a picture if possible and sizes where appropriate. Another of the great ideas we are putting into action is the creation of a Wayfarers Directory.
As Wayfarers we are here to support one another. Whether it is knowledge, skills, moral support, material objects, or physical assistance, we all have something to offer.
Often people think of "support" as praying for and talking with, but true support is so much more. Maybe you just want to talk ... or maybe you need a ride to the doctor ... or help to understand your new iPhone ... or changing a light bulb that is too tall for you to reach ... or borrow a ladder, you get the idea.
This voluntary "opt-in" directory will include not only name, phone, address, email (if you have one), and birthday -- the basics on how to connect and celebrate one another -- but you can also include skills/knowledge/materials that you are open to sharing in support of other Wayfarers. You will also be given the opportunity to add a picture - and we hope you do - as this makes it much easier for folks since sometimes names and faces seem to live in separate places in our brains!! And just so you know, the option to join the directory is open to all Wayfarers, but the actual contents of the directory will only be available to those who opt-in. | | If you have questions or issues using the button above, please contact Maggie Renken at maggierenken@gmail.com. | WAYFARERS RECIPES COLLECTION Sharing food is one of the wonderful ways we create and experience community here at Wayfarers. One of the ideas that came from our Sunday discussion was creating a collection of recipes from Wayfarers. This great idea needs someone to shepherd the project. If you are interested in heading up this project, please contact Jen Utley at (901) 581-2404 or jenutley@bellsouth.net. We will begin having a monthly movie night. Look for more details in next week's newsletter. Singing together is something we enjoy - something that brings us closer together. With that in mind, start thinking about songs you would like to sing in chapel. It could be a hymn, a pop song (like Lean On Me), a kids song (like This Little Light of Mine) -- doesn't matter -- just something that reflects our values and is fun to sing. Watch next week's newsletter for details on submitting your ideas. | | TUESDAY - August 8 - WRITERS GROUP (5-6:30 PM) The writers group, facilitated by Sam Renken, continues inspiring writers and giving voice to their creations.
THURSDAY - August 10 - YOGA (10 AM) Gentle yoga on the deck with Dana Thiele is sure to help you stretch and relax.
SUNDAY - August 13 - SERVICE (10 AM) This Sunday, our music is provided by Crowe Capps then Rev. Bill Groves will share with us "The Magical Mystical Music Box."
SUNDAY - August 13 - DEATH CAFE (2-4 PM) Thoughts on death you would like to voice - or maybe looking for ideas about death from others? Death Cafe this Sunday is the perfect fit. | | Wonder what you missed at the chapel last week? Here's a quick overview. In addition to our regular Writers Group and Yoga gatherings, chapel life also included the following: It was another fun gathering. The next drum circle will be August 30 at 7 PM. This one promises to be special as this is not only a "Full Moon" but a "Super Moon" and a "Blue Moon". | | SERVICE & POTLUCK Music by Ruth Henry followed by "Spiritual Community" Discussion facilitated by Jen Utley. | | And we all had a good time visiting during Potluck | | MOUNTAIN MUSE in CONCERT It may have threatened rain outside, but inside was pure fun inside as Mountain Muse (with guests Mario Renes on bass and Owen Devine on drums) delighted us was an afternoon of all Beatles music. | | | WEBSITE CONVERSION COMPLETE | Please begin using www.wayfarerschapelga.org to access the chapel website.
The old address will still work for now, but may disappear in the future so please begin using the new address now.
As with any major computer based changeover, there is always potential for a glitch in the system. If you come across anything that doesn't seem to look right or be working correctly, please contact Ruth Henry at (901) 218-4234. | | Dr. Norman Olsen will be offering an American Heart BLS class for healthcare providers at the end of the month. If you are interested in attending, please contact Norman at (787) 889-5820. | | SATURDAY, September 16, 2023 (12-4 PM) For several years now, Rev. Dr. Randy Doster and Rev. Mark Stein - regular speakers at Wayfarers - have sponsored an annual picnic as a means for folks from the various metaphysical communities in the area to get to together and share with food and fun.
This year's Metaphysical Picnic will be held Saturday, September 16th from 12-4 PM at Western Carolina University Picnic Pavilion (201 Poplar Ave, Sylva, NC). See PICNIC FLYER for details of event and volunteer opportunities. | | Love cannot remain by itself - it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action and that action is service. |
