| | | | National Summer Learning Day is just days away! There’s still time to spread awareness about the importance of summer learning.
The National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) invites you to celebrate National Summer Learning Day on July 12 with NSLA’s first Official National Read-Aloud Book, Trombone Shorty, and the Lands’ End Art Contest – two fun ways to celebrate summer learning! What better way to celebrate summer learning than through two activities that can transport young people anywhere: reading and creativity? And the NSLA has two resources for you: NSLA’s first Official National Read-Aloud Book, Trombone Shorty, and Lands’ End Art Contest which launches on July 12 at summerlearning.org. NSLA has created easy-to-use outreach materials to make it easy for your organization in spreading awareness about the summer slide including sample social media posts, graphics, a PSA copy, sample proclamation and a press release template.

| | Virginia needs YOUR help to end summer hunger.Summer can be the hungriest time of the year for Virginia children who depend on school meals. Kids who suffer from hunger in the summer are more likely to experience the “summer slide," losing what they learned and starting the next school year behind their peers. The Summer Meals Program fills in the gap by providing free meals to all children and teens 18 years old and younger when school is out. The Program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, administered by the Virginia Department of Education, and operated by local organizations throughout the Commonwealth. In 2017, 149 organizations served over 3.7 million meals at over 1,500 unique locations (such as churches, libraries, schools, and parks). Below are several ways to get involved in the Summer Meals Program– contact Sarah Steely (sarah.steely@doe.virginia.gov or (570) 854-5023) to learn more or get connected! - Offer Summer Meals. Do you offer summer programming, but not a complimentary meal? Or do you offer a meal, but pay for it with your own donations or operating funds? You may be eligible to serve meals at no cost to you or your participants by becoming a summer meals SITE. As a site, you would partner with a local Summer Meals sponsor, who would prepare the meals for you to serve at your program.
- Promote Summer Meals. Are you familiar with your community and where students live, learn, and play in the summer months? Help us promote Summer Meals by sharing information with your coworkers, neighbors, and congregations. Starting in June, ask them to text “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to 877-877 to receive a list of meal sites and operating times nearest them. Contact Sarah for promotional flyers and yard signs.
- Volunteer. Do you have willing volunteers who want to enhance existing summer meals sites? Partner with a nearby site and provide volunteer support. Assist with meal service or engage the kids in an enrichment activity, such as storytime or an organized game.
