Nationally, and in Virginia, November is Native American Heritage Month. Take the opportunity to celebrate the history, culture, and lives of American Indians. Here are some resources to start with:

  • Native American Heritage Collection: From PBS/VPM, this collection includes videos, lesson plans, and various media.

  • Native Land: This interactive map allows you to enter an address to see the relevant indigenous territories in that location. Links to information on the corresponding  nation, language, or treaty will appear.

  • Indians in Virginia: This entry in the Encyclopedia Virginia, from the Virginia Humanities, provides a wealth of information on Indigenous communities and peoples of Virginia.

  • National Geographic: In the educator resource library you can find resources for teaching youth in grades 3-12.

NAA NEXT Generation of Afterschool Leaders Nominations Now Open


Nominate your colleagues for the Next Generation of Afterschool Leaders 2022. NAA (National Afterschool Association) will highlight individuals age 30 or under as of November 10, 2021 who are:

  • Active in the broader afterschool community, including, but not limited to membership in NAA and its state affiliate, VPOST

  • Actively engaged in efforts to elevate the afterschool field and profession

 

In addition, successful nominees will demonstrate:

  • A proven passion for developing themselves and others, and persistence in growing as a leader

  • Contributions that have started to influence entire organizations, communities, and beyond

  • The NAA Core Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies (CKSCs) at the Apply Level, moving toward Amplify in many of the CKSC content areas.

Your voice matters: Help continue to showcase why afterschool programs are critical during the pandemic 

 

The sixth wave of the Afterschool in the Time of COVID-19 tracking survey, conducted by Edge Research on behalf of the Afterschool Alliance is now open. By taking Afterschool Alliance’s short survey, you are helping document the ways in which the pandemic continues to impact your program, the supports your program is providing to the children and families in your community, and lift up the short- and long-term effects of COVID-19 on the afterschool field as a whole.

 

All those who complete the survey will be entered into a drawing for the chance to win one of 50 gift cards in the amount of $50!

Bring Student Reporting Labs to your Afterschool Program via Mizzen by Mott

PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL) and Mizzen by Mott are partnering to help after school leaders awaken the storytelling passions of their students. Hear from Student Reporting Labs (SRL) founder Leah Clapman and youth media producer Mohammad Pasha as they discuss the many ways afterschool program leaders can get started with activities, lesson plans for students to dig into video journalism and news making.

Virginia Humanities Fellowship


Virginia Humanities is currently seeking six educators to join a new K-12 Fellowship scheduled to begin in March 2022. All educators committed to teaching the humanities including after-school specialists are encouraged to apply. Fellows will be given a stipend of $4000.00, a 360-degree camera, and two relevant books needed for research. Fellows will also be given unique opportunities for collaborations with specialists in their areas of interest as well as Virginia Humanities staff. Learn more here.

  • Potential side effects

  • When and were to get vaccinated

  • How this new vaccination can impact OST programs

Dec 6-12 in Computer Science Education Week


CS Week is an annual call to action to inspire K-12 youth to learn and celebrate computer science. Our friends at Code Virginia have are hosting an online LAUNCH event along with an entire virtual week of speakers, family nights, kids activities, competitions, and professional learning sessions for educators. Additionally, our partners at Girls Who Code are hosting their first ever CS Week events for GWC clubs.

NAA GUIDE TO EQUITABLE HIRING AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES

The Out-of-School Time (OST) Leader’s Guide to Equitable Hiring and Staff Development Practices intends to catalyze the OST workforce, our stakeholders, and partners to examine systems, elevate practices and policies that will build and strengthen the field.  


The guide includes three sections:

  1. Recruitment and Hiring

  2. Onboarding and Professional Development

  3. Performance Reviews and Feedback

Each section includes best practices, guiding questions to support policy and practice changes, and no- to low-cost resources to support equitable hiring and staff development practices.
