For the ‘23-’24 school year, we are excited to announce our upcoming season of NBA Math Hoops! NBA Math Hoops leverages the game of basketball and the NBA/WNBA brands to build fundamental math and social-emotional skills through a physical and digital basketball-themed board game, a curriculum, and a community program experience. Designed for students in grades 4-8, this free program develops students’ algebra readiness prior to entering high school, while strengthening important skills including self-regulation and executive function. The NBA Math Hoops program is implemented in in-school, out-of-school, and home learning environments.
Through programs like NBA Math Hoops, Learn Fresh is dedicated to achieving equitable representation in STEM fields among girls, students of color, and those living in low-income communities.

The Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY) and the national nonprofit KABOOM! are partnering to build eight new playgrounds throughout Virginia in 2023 to provide healthy spaces where kids can thrive. Each playground will be custom-designed by kids and community members through an engaging and fun process that culminates in a volunteer playground build day. While applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, this is a competitive process so interested youth-serving organizations and municipalities are encouraged to apply quickly for these exclusive opportunities to bring healthy play to Virginia communities.

On June 22, the Office of Child Care posted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) Regulations. It aims to make child care, including school-aged care, more accessible and affordable for families and more attractive to participating providers. Public comment on the proposed rule is open through August 28, 2023. You can submit your comment here or share with VPOST to comment on your behalf.
According to the National Center for Afterschool and Summer Enrichment, 45 percent of those served with CCDF are school-age. Similar to early care, afterschool and summer programs serving school-age children have struggled to keep doors open, maintain affordable costs, and ensure staff are well-trained and supported. One area of particular importance in responding to this NPRM is to continue emphasizing the need for high-quality options for parents of school-age children. This ensures that parents can work while their kids have safe, enriching places to learn and develop. We encourage the field to take a look and submit their thoughts and comments on areas of importance to them, their families, and programs. A “How-To” tool is included on the NPRM page. Afterschool Alliance has announced they are seeking applicants for the Youth Ambassador program! Youth aged 13 and older are invited to apply by sharing their afterschool experiences by August 31, 2023.
Youth Ambassadors to share their perspectives on afterschool programs with a national audience. Through monthly calls, Youth Ambassadors receive training on being afterschool advocates—learning how to effectively communicate about their afterschool experiences with elected officials, media, and others in leadership positions, and to use their afterschool stories to advocate for change. Each Youth Ambassador receives a stipend of $1,000 after their participation in the program, which runs for 8 months, from approximately October to May.
Applicants will need: To be 13 years of age or older A desire to advocate on behalf of students across the country for afterschool programs for all A parent or guardian contact email and approval to submit your application To respond to two prompts:
Describe a typical day in your afterschool program Describe a meaningful experience that you have had participating in your afterschool program. This could be a lesson that you learned, a place that you went to, or a connection that you made with other students or a staff member, etc.
Interested youth can submit their story by August 31, 2023. | | | Celebrate the 24th annual Lights On Afterschool on Oct. 26, 2023!Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year. The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do, and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.
