VPOST is launching our Youth Entrepreneur Strategies Project

VPOST is partnering with Hampton City Schools, James Madison University (JMU) X-Labs, Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Title IV 21st CCLC, and Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) to develop a coordinated strategic approach to high school youth entrepreneurship experiences in Virginia. The project, Youth Entrepreneurship Strategies (YES) will improve entrepreneurial awareness, by recognizing environmental changes, identifying opportunities, and thinking creatively to develop student voice.

In support of this work, VPOST welcomes Kaitlin Ilnitzki to lead this project!

Kaitlin is the Assistant Director of Virginia + DC FIRST LEGO League, located at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.  Previously, she was a middle school educator in Staunton, Virginia for ten years.  After teaching Language Arts for six years, she moved to STEM education and taught an interdisciplinary course introducing students to the basics of robotics, programming, and engineering.  That switch ignited her passion for STEM education and specifically providing students with opportunities that open up pathways to STEM careers and CTE programs.

Originally from the Hampton Roads area, Kaitlin has lived in Harrisonburg, Virginia for the past 18 years.  Six of those years were spent working on undergraduate and graduate degrees at James Madison University.  Go, Dukes!

Change of Leadership at the Virginia Department of Education

Dr. James Lane, the Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction is stepping down. Dr. Lane spoke at VPOST 2019 conference and worked with VPOST and the Richmond OST Alliance to host an OST Town Hall at the height of the pandemic. We wish Dr. Lane success in his future endeavors and look forward to working with him in the future.

In the interim, Governor Ralph Northam has named Dr. Rosa Atkins as Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction. Dr. Atkins was the first Assistant Superintendent for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at VDOE. Prior to this role, Dr. Atkins served as the Superintendent of Charlottesville Public Schools for 15 years. As the city’s second-longest serving superintendent, she led the division’s successful efforts to raise graduation rates, reduce dropout rates and expand opportunities for all students. Read more about Dr. Atkins!
