Lights on Afterschool 2022


It’s on! We’re proud to be joining the Afterschool Alliance and thousands of out-of-school time programs in the largest nationwide showcase of afterschool programs during the 23rd annual Lights On Afterschool celebration on October 20th!

The Lights On Afterschool toolkit provides all the resources you need to plan a great showcase of your program. Help make this year the brightest Lights On celebration yet!

In this Community of Practice, you will:

  • Learn research-backed best practices for STEM family engagement.

  • Engage in a meaningful and lively discussion with fellow OST educators

  • Get resources and;

  • Share experiences and practical ideas for putting it all into action


Joining and Timeline

  • You join this Community of Practice as an organizational team of 2-3 people. Our goal is for teams to use the takeaways from this CoP and put them into action.

  • We are accepting between 5-7 teams, with a max of 15 participants.

  • Teams attend 5 sessions, plus one introductory team conference. There are readings in between sessions. (Less than one hour needs to be allocated).

Participants that fully participate will be rewarded with a $75 gift card for their commitment to quality and professionalism.

Techbridge Girls re-engineers the way STEM education is taught for BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) girls (including girl-identifying and non-gender conforming youth) from marginalized communities by equipping educators and volunteers with equity training and curricula, and social and emotional learning practices that promote access, belonging and persistence. This opportunity will focus on three of Techbridge Girl's curricula: Ignite (Grades 3-8), Inspire (Grades 3-5), ChangeMakers (Grades 6-8). Learn more about these programs here.

Business Women's Giving Circle

Since 2014, the Business Women's Giving Circle has awarded more than $400,000 to organizations providing experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), Leadership, and Entrepreneurship with a measurable impact on the lives of over 3,000 young women and girls in Northern Virginia.  This grant supports nonprofit organizations and schools that provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programs to girls and young women, preschool through college-age in Northern Virginia, emphasizing innovative program components such as entrepreneurship, leadership, or mentorship.

Micron Opportunity Fund

The Community Foundation has partnered with Micron Technology, Inc to strengthen STEM learning through efforts to build knowledge, systems, and capacity in Northern Virginia by ensuring underserved students have access to high-quality STEM learning experiences. Two grants of $7,000 each will be awarded this year.
