Moonshot Monday is VPOST twice monthly Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) newsletter, supported in part by STEM Next’s Million Girls Moonshot initiative. STEM Next Opportunity Fund gives afterschool and summer programs across the nation the proven tools they need to create rich, supportive STEM experiences—so all youth, especially girls, can explore, create, and envision themselves as future innovators.

2025 Flight Crew Application is Open!


The Flight Crew is a highly visible youth ambassador program led by STEM Next Opportunity Fund, elevating youth from every state who can speak about the power of STEM learning outside of school. ALL youth ages 13-18 are encouraged to apply!


The application for STEM Next’s 2025 Flight Crew is closing soon on March 12th! We encourage youth ages 13-18, with experience in afterschool and summer STEM learning and an interest in public speaking, to apply today.


From April-December 2025, Flight Crew members: 

  • Act as a champion for OST STEM by sharing their first-hand, impactful STEM experiences beyond the classroom;

  • Work with state leaders on relevant opportunities to advocate for OST STEM, create social media content and connect with media; 

  • Aspire to break down stereotypes and spark their peers' curiosity in STEM by connecting their STEM experiences to everyday life; 

  • Engage in leadership development opportunities, including public speaking, social media, and connections to mentors;

  • Receive resume and interview coaching as well as access to scholarships and internships

  • ALL YOUTH, including boys, are encouraged to apply!

  • This program is now nesting under STEM Next as a core initiative, versus as a program of the Million Girls Moonshot.

Digital Skills, Literacy, and Device Grant Opportunity


The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is excited to announce the application period is officially open for the new Digital Skills, Literacy, and Device (DSLD) Grant Program. This is a three-year program for eligible applicants to implement new, expand, and/or upscale existing programs related to the advancement of Digital Skills and Literacy, Digital Navigation, Digital Device Refurbishment, and/or Device Distribution.

MENTOR Virginia's Youth Ambassadors are facilitating a Youth STEM Forum. This is an engaging event designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians on Tuesday, March 4th at 6:00 PM. Highlights of the forum include engaging conversations covering cutting edge technology and scientific experiments for elementary afterschool programs to the careers that build our future, this forum will highlight the importance of STEM in educational development.

The National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST) is conducting a survey that is aimed at supporting the OST STEM workforce. The goal of the study is to inform program leaders and educators how to best obtain, prepare, and support staff to deliver high-quality STEM activities in out-of-school programs.

STEM Next Opportunity Fund will be hosting a Celebrate DNA Day Webinar prior to DNA Day in April. They ask recipients of the Strawberry DNA extraction kits to register to attend or asynchronously view that event to get more resources through the Future is Bright Campaign.
