New Education Plan Announcement from the Governor

On September 7, 2023, VPOST was live in Richmond, Virginia to hear the announcement from Governor Youngkin on the administration's plan to support Virginia’s students learning recovery, ALL IN VA. The plan focuses on the foundational elements of education: attendance, literacy, and learning. Governor Youngkin stated, "The ALL IN VA plan fosters collaboration and partnership between school divisions, our Department of Education, community leaders, and most importantly, students and their parents."

VPOST, as a friend of the field, voices the critical role that out-of-school time programs play in this collaboration of school-community partnerships. Decades of research prove that students in afterschool programs attend school more often, get better grades, and are more likely to graduate. Teachers report that students in afterschool programs show more interest in learning, behave better, and complete their homework assignments. Programs engage young people in enriching learning experiences that help them gain critical life skills and reach their full potential. In fact, A 2018 evaluation by the University of Memphis of Virginia’s 21st Community Center Learning Centers, which are out-of-school time programs funded through the Department of Education, found that based on teacher-reported outcomes, 76% of regularly attending students improved their ability to complete their homework and participation in class, and 69% improved their classroom behavior. Roughly 3 out of 4 regularly attending students surveyed felt that 21st CCLC programs help them “get better grades in school”, and “prepare for a job or a career”.

VPOST will continue our bi-partisan efforts to demonstrate to Virginia leaders how afterschool programs contribute to positive student outcomes and deserve increased investment.

Urgent Feedback Needed

The Virginia Partnership for Out-of-School Time (VPOST) is advocating for funding availability for Community-Based Organizations (CBO) and 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program continuation.

Data for Virginia shows that 30% of providers have a waiting list for families in their community seeking out-of-school time care.

We are asking that you take this survey (>5 minutes) to help us continue to push for quality OST programming.

For every 25 responses, VPOST will do a drawing for a $50 Amazon Visa Gift Card. This survey will close on September 30, 2023.

Celebrate the 24th annual Lights On Afterschool on Oct. 26, 2023!

Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year.

The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do, and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.
