Subject: Million Girls Moonshot Monday: NASA Live and Engineering Design Challenges

This Million Girls Moonshot Monday newsletter comes to you right on the heels of our 11th Annual Conference, Roadmap to Resiliency in Out-of-School Time. I can't help but reflect on the running theme of resilience and how it relates to opening doors for girls and underrepresented groups in STEM careers. We heard from Jennifer Vaden Barth from Google who recounted her own story of being a gifted calculus student as a teen but not being included in technological access because only her male peers were invited. As she became an adult and entered a career at Google, it was as a secretary, rather than the role she now holds. Jennifer presently evaluates the impact of Google’s Computer Science in Media, an initiative that works to change the perceptions of who can be a computer scientist, particularly focusing on underrepresented groups in the tech industry. Her story reminds us of the critical work of reimagining who can be an engineer; who can build; who can make.

Diving Deeper into an Engineering Mindset

In October, we continue to dive deeper into three more critical features of an engineering mindset: 1) criteria and constraints; 2) science and math; and 3) multiple solutions. These features allow students to apply their knowledge of science, math, and their community to real-world problems with no single solution. In this process, students have voice and choice and are truly in the driver's seat over their learning.
