Subject: VPH2020 Round table on in silico trials + VPHi award ceremony

Dear VPHi members,
other two important sessions are in the pipe line during the VPH2020 conference:

1. Round Table : “Good Simulation Practices: bringing the digital twin to life"

Tomorrow 27 August, from 20.30 to 21.30 CET

Theme: The use of computer modeling and simulation (CM&S) in all aspects of life sciences has made substantial progress over the last couple of years. Examples of in silico medicine approaches that have made their way to the patient range from advanced diagnostic tools over clinical decision support systems to implication of CM&S in every step of the R&D process of pharmaceutical and medical device therapies. Many activities are currently ongoing to ensure that the road from the computer to the patient is clear for all stakeholders, from academia and industry to regulators and policy makers. In this round table, many of these stakeholders are represented. All speakers will shortly present their take on what is needed to bring the digital twin to life. What are their ongoing actions and activities that will contribute to this goal? What do they need to continue? Are all partners on board? After these introductory presentations, the floor is opened to an interactive Q&A, moderated by a professional science journalist.

Moderator:
Hetty van Helsmoortel (PhD & performer), science journalist for public broadcast network in Belgium

Speakers:
  • Industry: Nicolas Villain (Phillips Healthcare), Antoine Bril (Servier)
  • Regulatory: Brent Craven (FDA) and Flora Musuamba Tshinanu (EMA)
  • Funders: Christina Kyriakopoulou (European Commission DG RTD) & Jean-Marc Bourez (European Institute of Technology Health)
  • Academia: Liesbet Geris (VPHi)

2. VPHi award ceremony

28 August 2020, from 10.30 to 11.30 CET

The VPHi award ceremony is dedicated to present the outstanding work done by the three VPHi members that won this year awards:
  1. Antoine Motte dit Falisse (KULeuven): winner of the Best VPHi Thesis Award in In Silico Medicine, with his thesis on "A framework for personalized modeling and predictive simulation to study gait in children with cerebral palsy"
  2. Lorenzo Sala (Université de Strasbourg): winner of the Best VPHi-InSilicoTrials PhD Thesis Award in In Silico Medicine for potential application in industrial R&D, with his thesis on "Mathematical modelling and simulation of ocular blood flows and their interactions"
  3. And last but not least the winner of the Best VPHi student award, that will be appointed during the course of the conference.
During this session, the VPHi ex Dir, Prof Lies Geris, will also announce the honorary memberships of the former VPHi Presidents, Prof Denis Noble and Prof Marco Viceconti for the great contribution they have given and are continuing to give to the VPHi and the in silico medicine at large.

Both the sessions will be accessible via the Conference platform BlueJeans and will be also lifestreamed via the VPHi Facebook page (details can be found here)

Best regards
Martina
