Upcoming Webinar: Building Relationships and Communities of Empowerment

Date: Thursday, October 24th
Time: 7:00–8:30 PM EST

Join us for an exciting and interactive webinar featuring Jasmine Hilbert, SMART’s Director of National Outreach, and LaNija Redmond, Community Outreach Coordinator, along with others in our outreach community with their boots on the ground.

In this session we will explore how we can build relationships in our local communities to increase collaboration around providing multiple pathways to recovery FOR ALL.

Our goal? To empower and equip you with tools and strategies to help spread awareness about SMART Recovery. Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • Crafting your SMART elevator speech.

  • Tips for tabling at local events and/or touring community facilities

  • Pursuing local outreach funding

  • Making friends along the way

  • And so much more…

If this sounds like something you are curious about, already doing, or would like to explore further, we would love for you to join us. Support Your Favorite SMART Recovery Meeting!

This October, SMART Recovery is highlighting our Support This Meeting fundraising functionality, offering a simple and impactful way for participants and supporters to contribute directly to their favorite meetings. Through our SMARTfinder system, you can donate to SMART Recovery USA in honor of a specific meeting, ensuring that your contributions directly support the meetings that matter most to you.

To make a donation, visit any meeting page in the SMARTfinder system and click on the red “Support This Meeting” button. You can even set up recurring monthly donations for ongoing support. Every donation, no matter the size, helps us sustain and grow our life-changing meetings across the country.

Why Support This Fundraiser?

We budget approximately $125 in direct expenses per year to support each in-person meeting and $425 per year for each online meeting. With 1,658 active meetings, we rely on the generosity of supporters to cover these costs and continue expanding our services. If every meeting received just $25 in donations, we could raise over $41,000—funds that would allow us to channel more resources into program development and outreach!

Additional Benefits of Participation

Meetings that raise $25 or more will earn the opportunity to be selected to receive one free 2025 national conference registration for one of their meeting facilitators. Another five meetings that meet the $25 threshold will be randomly selected to receive one free self-paced facilitator training to support a participant getting trained as a facilitator.

Facilitators—Encourage Your Participants to Join In!

We encourage facilitators to remind participants to take part in this special fundraiser. Direct your group members to SMARTfinder, where they can search for your meeting, visit the meeting page, and click the “Support This Meeting” button. Group donations made “pass the hat” style should continue to be submitted via the group donation form.

Your support is critical to our success. Thank you for helping us ensure SMART Recovery meetings remain accessible to everyone who needs them.

Call for Proposals - 2025 SMART Conference: Building Communities of Empowerment

We’re excited to invite you to submit your proposals for our 2025 SMART Recovery Conference! This year’s theme is “Building Communities of Empowerment”, and we’re focusing on how SMART Recovery can continue to lead the way in creating strong, empowered communities at the local level.

This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your ideas, experiences, and success stories with the broader SMART Recovery community. Whether it’s through new partnerships, innovative techniques, or sharing how you’ve embraced multiple pathways to recovery, we want to hear from you!

While we welcome all submissions, we’re especially looking for presentations that touch on:

  • Successful partnerships that have expanded SMART Recovery into more communities

  • Strategies and techniques that highlight and strengthen SMART Recovery USA's core values: Empowerment, Equity, Inclusion, Integrity, and Accountability

  • Harm reduction approaches that allow us to better support participants regardless of their recovery goals

  • Growing and strengthening our Family & Friends program

We have an unprecedented opportunity to make the promise of multiple pathways a reality today in more and more diverse communities. By submitting your proposal, you’ll have the chance to inspire others by sharing your experiences and helping SMART continue to grow and evolve.

Proposals are due by October 31, 2024, and you’ll be notified of decisions by December 14, 2024.

We can’t wait to see your ideas and continue building a strong, inclusive, and empowered SMART Recovery community—together!

Facilitators Wanted for Successful Life Skills

We’re seeking facilitators for SMART Successful Life Skills classes! SMART offers this course for free to recovery organizations in certain states. This is made possible through a partnership with The Fletcher Group and a grant from the Elevance Foundation.

If you have at least six months’ experience running a SMART meeting, we invite you to apply. After a brief interview and orientation, facilitators will run a 12-sesson Successful Life Skills course with one of those organizations. These sessions are normally held via Zoom, so you can participate from anywhere in the U.S.  Additionally, grant funds allow us to offer a $25 stipend per session, per facilitator.

Please contact Alena Kuplinski (akuplinski@smartrecovery.org) directly if you are interested in taking part in this important initiative.
