Announcements & Reminders

April is Volunteer Month!

April is National Volunteer Month and here is one simple fact: SMART Recovery would not be able to function without the dedication of thousands of volunteers. We are grateful for each of you and your dedication to our mission!

Beginning April 16, 2023 we will once again be offering scholarships for our Facilitator/Family and Friends Combo course to encourage volunteering for SMART Recovery. The scholarship valued at $100 reduces the cost of this training to $29.

If have a participant in your meeting, a friend, or a family member who might be interested in becoming a SMART Recovery volunteer, please print out this flyer to share with them. Applications will be accepted April 16-30, 2023 and scholarships will be awarded on May 8, 2023.

Support SMART Volunteers with Unite for Recovery

We are constantly looking for ways to support our volunteers in their work alongside those struggling with addictions. To help with this, we have decided to join SMART affiliates around the world for a fundraising campaign called Unite for Recovery (UFR). We are raising money to directly support our volunteers in the U.S. and Canada with training scholarships and other resource materials. UFR is organized around the idea of a walk which can include volunteers, participants, family members, friends, or others who support recovery. The goal is to “walk around the globe” by engaging people from dozens of countries in walking and other activities and eventually covering the 24,901 miles it would take to circle the globe. A long journey, but it begins with one step—your decision to participate.

Keeping our meeting list updated

As you may have noticed, we have an option for participants to report an issue with a meeting. This has proven to be a helpful tool in making us aware of meetings that are no longer active or need to be updated. However, some of these reports do end up being a result of user error, such as the participant attempting to join at the wrong day or time, or simply missing vital information which is provided on the meeting listing. While we may reach out to you about these, please know that an inquiry into the status of your meeting does not imply any wrongdoing. Like you, we are working our hardest to provide the best possible care to our participants. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to keep SMARTfinder accurate.

Facilitator Refresher

Our Facilitator Refresher course will be held Saturday, May 6, 2023. Registration begins Friday, April 21st. Watch your email for details!

Going Upstream: Addiction Care for the Masses

Going Upstream:  Addiction Care for the Masses

William R. Miller, Ph.D.

The University of New Mexico

Description: Although the vast majority of people with diagnosable substance use disorders will never receive specialist addiction treatment, most will recover.  Dr. Saitz was passionate about serving this at-risk population.  Drawing on his 50 years of research, Dr. Miller will discuss various ways of “going upstream” to intercede at earlier stages of problem development including (1) teaching moderation skills, (2) brief opportunistic interventions such as SBIRT, (3) motivational interviewing and a person-centered clinical style, and (4) providing behavioral health services within mainstream healthcare.
