Details
Despite laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, many aspects of recovery remain inaccessible for people with disabilities. Often organizations, facilitators, and even trained professionals simply do not know where programs and meetings are failing to meet access needs or how to make the changes necessary for true inclusivity and universal access. This presentation will explain theories of disability, how SMART Recovery's mission and philosophy coincide with disability justice and universal design, how to make virtual and in person meetings more accessible to disabled and/or Deaf people, and how to reach members of the disabled community in need of recovery services.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to perform an audit of their in person or virtual SMART Recovery meeting to determine where changes for access are needed Participants will be able to name at least 3 different resources for increasing accessibility and how to access each Participants will be able to differentiate between the medical and social model of disability and articulate how the social model coincides with SMART Recovery principles and language
