We Heart You: A look into Heart's Health

Even if love is a daily thing, the feeling gets more intense in the month of February. Love is in the air as they say it!

But truly, apart from gifts and fancy dinners, there is no greater act of love but to to take care and be with each other for as long as possible! So be healthy!

Let's take care of our heart, one of the organs that keep us alive and pumping!

Heart problems can have extremely serious consequences, but in many cases adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle can reduce your risk.

1. Adopt a Healthy Diet
- Reduce the quantity of cholesterol and saturated and trans fats by avoiding animal fats and sources of hidden fat such as pastries and pies.

- Increase the amount of fish (but not deep-fried fish), and eat more fruit, veggies whole grains. A diet high in soluble fibre promotes the excretion of cholesterol.

- Include good fats (Omegas) and foods that have antioxidant and heart-protecting properties, such as garlic, green tea and tomatoes.

- Stick to a diet that’s low in salt by decreasing your consumption of processed meats (e.g. bacon, ham and salami), packaged foods, and junk foods.

2. Practice a Healthy Lifestyle
- Drink alcohol in moderation, and favour antioxidant-rich red wine.

- Quit smoking.

- Regular aerobic exercise can help to maintain a healthy heart.

- Practice techniques to lower your stress levels and improve your ability to cope under pressure such as Yoga, meditation, tai chi and qi gong.

- Talk to your doctor before taking any supplements or changing your diet or lifestyle so that it aligns with your medication.
