CBD (Cannabidiol) Side Effects
Few to NO side effects are reported by most dog and cat owners using CBD with their pets. But here are some that you should take into account… Dry mouth: Research has shown that CBD can decrease the production of saliva. For dogs, this would manifest as an increased thirst.
Lowered blood pressure: High doses of CBD have been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. Even though the drop is small, it might create a brief feeling of light-headedness.
Drowsiness: Dog owners have used CBD to treat anxiety. The calming effect of CBD can also cause slight drowsiness, especially when using higher doses.
Vomiting and Diarrhea, primarily if MCT oil is used as the carrier oil If ‘low quality’ concern about solvent toxicity and residues (ie using acetone, butane, benzene), carcinogenic, some are neurotoxins
Drug Reactions?
Any drug metabolized by CYP450 enzymes could potentially interact with cannabidiol. According to the Indiana University Department of Medicine, drugs known to use the CYP450 system include:
Steroids( ie Prednisone),
Calcium channel blockers, Antihistamines Benzodiazepines ( ie Valium), Antiarrythmics Antibiotics, Anesthetics, Antidepressants ( ie Clomicalm, Amitryptilline) Anti-epileptics, Beta blockers, NSAIDs ( most common Anti-inflammatories)
Most of these though are DOSE dependent, and at the levels CBD is given (1mg/10bs), there are few drug interactions reported. That being said, it is still wise to be discussing this with your veterinarian.
