------------------------------------------ Marketplace Veterinary Investigation ------------------------------------------
A consumer show in Canada called 'Marketplace' recently aired a documentary in which they took a healthy, fully vaccinated dog to 10 different Toronto area veterinary clinics, to see what was advised by the different veterinarians
The focus of the show is costs, but the first part that concerned me is that in spite of all the new published vaccine guidelines, saying ONLY give Distemper/Parvovirus vaccine every 3 years, 6 out of the 10 clinics were advising to vaccinate this 'undercover' dog today. He was last vaccinated 1 year ago for Distemper/Parvovirus.
One clinic was recorded on camera as saying they advised this as a way of getting clients 'in the door'
Then there were the un-necessary heartworm tests, pricy veterinary weight loss food for this 'normal weighted' dog, and even not needed expensive eye surgery for un diagnosed KCS ( dry eye)
An interview with a veterinarian at the CVMA ( Canadian Vet Medical Association), was quoted as saying: ' it's up to the individual veterinarian to make the vaccine recomendations, in spite of ALL the research- meaning they can suggest yearly vaccines with no consequences...
My concern is yes with the financial cost, but more with the health risks of too many vaccines. Vaccine reactions, vaccine induced cancers, auto-immune disease, increased chance of allergies, then other organ diseases.
Knowing this, the CVMA should be advocating for the pets, and pet owners, and then mandating that this practice changes.
On the brighter side, some veterinarians fully endorse the new vaccine protocols, and one was quoted on camera as saying the vaccine duration of immunity may be good for 10 years...If I were in Toronto, I would be inclined to see that veterinarian.

Heal Your Pet At Home!
Best Wishes,
Dr Andrew Jones, DVM
P.S. The big point I take from ALL of this is that YOU need to be more involved. Ask questions, do your own research, don't take what is said at face value, and learn some basic at home veterinary care skills.
This is great for cat owners.
