Hi Friend,

Welcome to Wednesday..

I have some aging pets in my house, and one of them is displaying some signs of senility.

First my cat Cleo is older (14) and he has chronic renal failure.

But he is on canned food, additional fluid, a phophorus binder, and responding well to that.

BUT..

His brain is not working so well.

He YOWLS at the most inopportune times

He wants OUT at 4AM...

An incessant YOWL...

Then back IN....ANOTHER YOWL

And then OUT again...YOWL

Crazy making, especially for significant others in the family who aren't as tolerant of old cat behaviors.

Perhaps you have some of the same problems?

---------------------------------
What's happening?
---------------------------------

This is similar to Alzheimer's in people. Pet's accumulate deposits of beta-amyloid (a protein plaque) in the brain with age.

They show signs similar to people with Alzheimer's.

Common symptoms of Cognitive Dysfunction:

•    Increased sleeping
•    Appear confused
•    Loss of training - ie house training
•    Unable to recognize familiar people
•    Lack of interest in surroundings/events
•    Increased drinking/increased urination
•    Decreased, occasionally increased appetite
•    Excessive panting
•    Unusual behaviours - ie staring at the wall
•    Excessive barking
•    Deafness
•    Overall less interest/activity - appearing "old"

-------------------------------
What CAN you do?
-------------------------------

1. Adapt to the behavior- I am now closing the bedroom door early in the morning, and have a supply of ear plugs  :-)

2. Supplements to HELP brain function

ANTIOXIDANTS. Of them all, Vitamin E appears to be most important in maintaining healthy brain function and delaying further loss of brain tissue; give 100 IU of Vitamin E per 10 lbs of body weight. An antioxidant combination (Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and Selenium) may be most effective.

Alpha-lipoic acid is a increasingly talked about supplement for people, and it can have benefits for your pet. It is an antioxidant, found in every cell in the body, and one of its main purposes is to convert sugar into energy. Being an antioxidant it also helps protect the cells of the body against free radical damage. Free radicals are the result of normal cellular reactions; they themselves cause harmful cell reactions, but alpha-lipoic acid can protect against this. Of special note, most antioxidants only work in water (ie Vitamin C) or fatty tissues (Vitamin E); alpha-lipoic acid works in both. The alpha-lipoic dose being: 10mg per 10lbs daily.

GINKGO BILOBA. Has been found to be effective in improving cognitive function in people with certain mental diseases. It increases profusion of blood and oxygen delivery to parts of the brain (cerebrum). Give 1 drop of the tincture per lb of body weight twice daily.

3. Specific Veterinary Diets that may help: Hills produces a specific brain diet for cognitive dysfunction which is high in antioxidants and L-carnitine.

4. Consider my supplements which have additional essential fatty acids, and antioxidants to HELP with normal brain function

P.S. A minimum trial period for ANY supplement is 30 days, and usually 60 days before you can properly assess it to see if is helping.

Many clients have seen marked improvements with my supplement in 14 days.

Definitely worth a try.
