August 7th, 2012 at 7:14 am ESTHello to you this Tuesday...

AVMA position on feeding RAW
--------------------------------------------
Some veterinarians wanted to amend the current AVMA position statement on Raw food for pets; basically recognizing that thousands of clients are feeding raw food, so what can we do to work with those clients.
Here is what was suggested:
"The AVMA recognizes that some people prefer to feed raw or undercooked animal-source protein to their pets. The AVMA recommends that veterinarians inform pet owners of potential risks and educate them on how to best mitigate the risk of pathogen exposure in both handling the food and in managing pets consuming undercooked or raw animal-source protein diets."
----------------------------------------------------------
But concerns were voiced: Raw food EQUATED to smoking
----------------------------------------------------------
When incoming AVMA President Douglas Aspros, DVM, opened the floor to objections and comments, Robert Groskin, DVM, of the Association of Avian Veterinarians voiced his concerns.
“Would a medical doctor tell his patients not to smoke but then tell them, ‘If you are going to smoke, only smoke unfiltered cigarettes,’ or ‘Only smoke so many cigarettes a day'?" Groskin says. “The goal is to state that raw and undercooked food are unhealthy period.”
After the discussion, the HOD voted down this proposal with a majority vote of 66.6 percent against the amendment. The second amendment changed the existing statement “Never feed inadequately treated animal-source protein to cats and dogs” to
-----------------
NEW amendment:
-----------------
“Avoid feeding inadequately treated animal-source protein to cats and dogs.”
In other words still not acknowledging ANY of the hundreds of thousands of pet owners that feed raw food, NOR any of the health benefits of feeding raw.
Or same old same old.
Let's just keep our head in the sand.
Heal Your Pet At Home!
Best Wishes,
Dr Andrew Jones, DVM
P.S. Are there specific health concerns from feeding raw?
Yes.
But do it correctly- and hundreds of thousands of pet owners do.
I am feeding some RAW to my own pets.
Are there CONCERNS from feeding DRY kibble?
YES
Such as the HUGE increase in obese pets, arthritis, diabetes- just to name a few.
Makes me wonder about who's interest the AVMA is acting for.
Pet owners and their pets.
Or LARGE food companies.
Ultimately it's up to you to decide.
P.P.S. My supplements are a great way to make your home diet, or raw diet balanced.
IF you are feeding kibble, they are a great way to add in ALL of the missing nutrients.
