Pet Food Truths

The entire food debate is a very perplexing one.

Dry or canned?

Raw?

Natural or not?

Then specifically what additives are harmful, and what are OK?

Some 'experts' claim that kibble is fine for dogs/cats, while others are strongly opposed.

Your veterinarian may say a food is 'fine to feed' then some so called Internet expert (gasp) says the opposite.

The truth..

1. There is a big variation in what you can feed, and different pets respond differently; we don't know everything

2. A BIG multi-BILLION dollar industry has now grown around YOU feeding your pet specific types of food, especially dry kibble with catchy names. They and their investors are not interested in massive change.

3. Both you as a consumer, and those giving you feeding advice ( ie your veterinarian) are influenced in a variety of ways by the corporations. An example is in the form of sponsoring continuing education at veterinary seminars.

I have had this similar discussion with colleagues who claim that they remain unbiased, but they are not really being aware of how this influences them.

By having the food company sponsor your event, you feel a certain obligation to 'help them out' ( ie return the favor). This often comes in the form of selling their food.

4. In general, healthier pets eat healthier. ( profound statement :-)  )  What I am saying is that they have MORE variety, NOT just the same kibble, they often have some home-made food, some raw, some canned.

5. My last point here relates to the lack of moisture and high carbohydrate content in dry kibble. Now this is directly linked to the increasing incidence of obesity and diabetes in pets (epecially cats).

Scientific fact, not just internet rumor.

Feed less kibble.
