Autoimmune Disease (Lupus) in Dogs
I recently had a pet owner ask me about autoimmune disease and their dog.
Is there ANYTHING alternative that they could use which could actually help?
First here is a quick rundown on what this is..
Lupus is a disease that involves the immune system attacking its own body. There are two types of lupus in dogs. Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), sometimes called “collie nose” or “nasal solar dermatitis,” is a common immune-mediated skin disease that usually affects the face, bridge of the nose, ears, lips, mouth and occasionally the genitalia, feet and skin around the eyes
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a much more serious condition. It targets the skin, kidneys, liver, lungs, heart and joints but can show up anywhere. Basically, SLE causes a dog’s body to attack itself from the inside out. Affected animals have shifting lameness, painful swollen joints, thickened foot pads and a stiff gait. They become weak, lethargic and depressed and can develop an array of other symptoms.
Natural Options
Flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids and alpha-linolenic acid, which may help reduce inflammation. One preliminary study suggested that people with lupus who took flaxseed had better kidney function. That is important because kidney disease (lupus nephritis) is a major complication of lupus. Animal Dose: 1000mg/10lbs twice daily
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) may help prevent joint and connective tissue breakdown. Animal Dose: 500mg/40lbs twice daily
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus): Seemed to reduce overactive immune systems in people with lupus in one study. However, the study was preliminary. More research is needed to know whether astragalus works, especially because astragalus is usually thought to stimulate the immune system.
Thunder god vine (Tripterygium wilfordii), a Chinese herb: You may also make teas from the root of this herb. Two preliminary studies suggest that this herb may help suppress the immune system and reduce joint pain and inflammation.
