Meningitis Scare Affects 14,000 Americans

It was supposed to make them healthy. But now about 14,000 people who received injections from a tainted batch of a steroid drug are haunted by fears that they may succumb next to a meningitis outbreak that has killed 23. A total of 282 people have contracted the disease so far. Seventeen thousand vials of the drug, made by the New England Compounding Center, were shipped from Framingham, Mass., to 23 states. “I think we’re both terrified that the other one is going to come down with it,” said one 57-year-old woman who received an injection along with her 80-year-old mother.


New England Compounding has not commented on its production process or what might have gone wrong, so outside experts can only speculate. But the betting money seems to be on dirty conditions, faulty sterilizing equipment, tainted ingredients or sloppiness on the part of employees.

The drug at the center of the investigation is made without preservative, meaning there's no alcohol or other solution in it to kill germs such as a fungus. So it's very important that it be made under highly sterile conditions, experts said.

P.S. Currently the FDA is targeting 'natural' remedies which make any sort of health claim, while at the same time they have failed to at all properly regulate a compounding pharmacy which has caused meningitis in 282 people, resulting in 23 people dying.

Clearly there is a 'conventional drug' bias, and a breakdown in what is MOST important to regulate.

Injectable Medications are ESPECIALLY important- they have an IMMEDIATE impact. Especially so when you are looking at injections directly into the spine, joints, blood system.

I hope that the regulatory bodies have some critical examination of what is MOST important, and put their resource there.
