Atopic Dermatitis is the most common cause of allergic symptoms in dogs.

In the past it was explained as being primarily due to allergens that were inhaled; now the belief is that these allergens are absorbed in the skin, then cause your dog’s immune system to respond inappropriately

Scratching, hair loss, odor, ear infections, paw licking, anal licking, redness (especially groin), blackening and thickening of skin.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa), the major ingredient of curry powder and prepared mustard, has a long history in both Chinese and Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent.

At higher levels it stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete cortisone.
The standard oral dose of curcumin is 250-400 mg, three times a day.

Probiotics
----------------

Probiotics are increasingly being used for dogs with allergies. These beneficial bacteria play a role in normalizing the overactive immune system.

You may see some marked decrease in allergic signs after using probiotics for 4 weeks. I am using my supplements with lactobacillus and bifidobacterium, but you can dose lactobacillus at 1/4 capsule per 10 lbs of body weight twice daily.

Topical Therapies
------------------------

Topical therapies have been developed with the goal of improving epidermal barrier function. The theory is that topically applying lipids to the skin stimulates it to produce its own lipids, leading to barrier repair.

 
Allerderm Spot-On a ceramide and fatty acid-containing liquid, is applied to the skin in a similar manner to monthly flea control products. The instructions for this product are to apply one pipette a week for four weeks and then one pipette a month for maintenance.
