Hello Friend,
Greetings to you this Wednesday..
I was reflecting on some of my animals surprising accomplishments, and I recalled a visit with my brother.....
------------------------------------ Jessie SAVES the day ------------------------------------
Ian ( my youngest brother) has a farm, with Many, many animals..both domestic and wild.
In his part of the country ( rural B.C.) there are lots of wild things.
Deer, Elk, Marmots and...Bears.
I lost count of the number of Black Bears.
They were everywhere, eating the Hawthorn Berries, and anything else they found enticing.
Needless to say, we were cautious when venturing into bear country.
We made LOTS of noise, and always brought along a few dogs - one of them being my dog Lewis, and my Dad's dog Jessie.
Jessie is a Bearded Collie - he really looks like the famous Benji.
He isn't the brightest light on the block..he LOVES to chase red cars.
As my brother lives close to the road, this isn't a wise occupation.
BUT..some times you can be surprised.
My family and myself were sleeping in a tent..My brother has a very small house with no guest bedrooms.
We were getting used to hearing the usual sounds of a farm at night..
Sheep and Goats baaaing..
The horses Lucky and Two Bit moving around in their pen.
The sound of an owl hooting.
On the last night I heard some fairly LARGE crashing noises in the tree next to our tent.
My wife was a wee concerned..she prompted me to check it out.
Lewis the trusty companion was sound asleep and not even moving..soo much for a guard dog.
I put on the headlamp.
I could hear MORE LARGER BANGING in the tree.
I could also hear Jessie growling on the porch of the house.
Apparently at least he was awake.
As I left the safe, cosy confines of the tent I saw 2 VERY LARGE EYES reflect back at me 5 feet away.
A Bear..A BIG BEAR.
I was frozen..as was the bear.
But at that moment, Jessie came running out of the porch at the bear.
Mr Bear instantly turned and ran..
A long way away..
By this time everybody was awake.
My father was up yelling for Jessie..JESSIE COME HERE NOW!
I was finally able to breath.
There are so many benefits of owning a pet.
I have talked about this many times.
And your pet can surprise you.
I NEVER would have guessed that Jessie would have Saved myself and family from a Bear encounter.
I now see Jessie in a whole new light.
My father claims that he always new that Jessie was destined for greatness.
Perhaps your pet isn't destined for greatness..But they may be..

P.S. There are so many reasons for owning a pet..
I truly can't imagine why you wouldn't have one.
A home is not a home without a pet!
So if you haven't appreciated your pet recently..then do so TODAY.
And in the vein of appreciating your pet, keep them healthy with some hands on healing.
