------------------------------- Jessie gets Hives -------------------------------
It's a rainy Tuesday here in Nelson- but spring has come, and I am enjoying the end of the snow :-)
My dogs, Lewis and Jessie have been known to wander around, and occasionally eat things they shouldn't..
Such as cat litter
Compost
Random pieces of food under the kitchen table
In most cases there is no reaction, but a few days ago things seemed different for Jessie
He had bumps form on his muzzle and back, redness in his groin, and became very itchy!
A case of hives, most likely a reaction to SOMETHING he ate.
The swelling is a result of cells in the skin releasing a component called histamine - from there you get the itching and bumps
Ultimately the idea is to AVOID whatever caused this, but immediately you want to gove something to help your dog (or cat)
Here is what I did, and this can work well for your own pet:
ANTIHISTAMINE. Over-the-counter antihistamines are very effective and safe at taking away the skin swelling in cases of hives. The ones I use most often are: Chlor-Tripolon (chlorpheniramine) at a dog dose of 1/4 of a 4 mg tablet per 10 lbs of body weight every 12 hours, and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at a dose of 1/4 of a 25 mg tablet per 10 lbs of body weight every 12 hours.
I then researched holistic options and came up with this:
NETTLE- it may be one of the most powerful natural herbal antihistamines. Nettle may help treat hives, psoriasis, eczema and chickenpox. Nettle possesses antihistamine and anti-inflammatory action, helps moderate the allergic response and helps tighten your mucous membranes.
Jessie responded quite well, and within 2 hours most of the swelling and itchiness was gone.
P.S. For virtually EVERY dog and cat disease, there are HOLISTIC options.
But you need to know HOW to tell WHAT your pet has
Which remedy to use.
And HOW to give it.
