HOW to Stop Licking?
-----------------------------------------------

A subscriber asked WHAT can they do to stop their pet from licking a wound?

Great question, and a good time for a quick review of what works

1. E-collar/neck collars

The Elizabethan collar is what most of you are familiar with- it resembles a lampshade, and prevents your dog or cat from getting to the area to lick.

You need to ensure that these are large enough so your dog can't get his tongue over it, and are tied tied enough around his neck so he can't easily remove it.

Neck collars

These are an improvement on the E-collars, and fit around your pet's neck like a neck brace. They work well to prevent the licking, but are much easier for your pet to manage.

ie they can still walk around without knocking EVERYTHING over...

2. Cover it up

This can mean using a bandage for a leg wound, a t-shirt for a wound on the chest/abdomen, or even something like pantyhose for wounds on the neck. You need to check the area, and clean it twice a day, but this may be ALL that you need.

3. Something that tastes BAD

My last suggestion is to apply something that repels your dog/cat.

I have had luck with Bitter Apple spray, and a mixture of K-Y jelly and cayenne pepper/tabasco.
