[Dr Andrew] How I 'manned' up

May 22nd, 2014 at 10:50 am EST

As I write to you, my mouth is throbbing.

My dentist worked on repairing 2 broken teeth.

Which required many a needle to freeze (YIKES!)

And I am not especially fond of dentists..

He is a nice dentist, friendly, efficient and knowledegable staff..

But the whole needle, mouth, drilling thing does not induce happy feelings.

Regardless I agreed to finally fix my mouth

or in my brother Michael's words...I 'manned' up :-)

Things are going OK in the comfy chair with blurry vision staring at the Home Renovation show

Most of the work is done, but the hygenist finds a hole in an adjacent tooth.

Problem being this is one hour and forty minutes later, and the freeing in wearing out.

My friendly dentist proceeds to drill, and my toes curl, and my breath suddenly stops

Yes I can feel it- BUT I really don't want more needles..so I say in frozen mouth language keeeeeeeeep going

Finally it ends :-)

I dribble a drink down my shirt on the way out of the dentist- a small tip to those of you being frozen- drinking is hard when half of your mouth is numb.

The hygenist offers me pain medication- but I decline- for as you see earlier: 'I am man, no pain meds needed here.'

But later the throbbing becomes more intense as the freezing wears off.

Being 'mr natural' former vet, I am in a house without conventional pain killers.

There is though my inlaws who are residing in our house downstairs.

And yes they do have pain killers.

Nice off pinkish pills...Ibuprofen.

Great!

I take 2, for 2 is always better than 1?

Within 30 mins, my mouth is at a dull throb...

I am almost smiling, but suddenly my stomach hurts..

At first I wondered if it was the dreaded stomach flu which plagued our house, and our neighbors.

Then it dawns on me..

The ibuprofen.

Aaagh

Conventional medication and it's side effects.

I then chose to consume some soothing peppermint tea, and to my pleasant surprise, my stomach became more normal.

A great lesson for me to be using the holistic alternatives first, then the conventional options last- not vice versa.

My manual contains the largest compilation of at home remedies to treat every common dog and cat health condition:

Here is what I could have used:

CHAMOMILLA. This is used to decrease puppy and kitten chewing, alleviating some of the signs of teething pain.

MYRRH. This can be mixed with water and applied topically to the inflamed gum tissue to decrease gum inflammation.

ARNICA. For acute pain/injuries to the mouth or teeth. I have used it myself for a tooth root abscess.  Dose 30C, 4 times daily.

DEVIL’S CLAW. Used in traditional African medicine and has scientific studies to back its effectiveness, give 100 mg or 10 drops per 10 lbs of body weight.

WILLOW BARK. A source of salicylate the active ingredient in Aspirin, therefore not for use in cats, give 100 mg or 10 drops per 10 lbs of body weight.

Heal your pet at home!

Best Wishes,

Dr Andrew Jones, DVM
