 Now About me
 ----------------------------

My tooth FINALLY feels much better...yesterday was root canal day..
Here is somewhat how it looked:
But getting to that was a rather painful experience, and does get me thinking about what it's like to be a client/patient and NOT the 'Doctor'

I had 2 broken teeth worked on, 2 molars together, and a temporary crown put on top

 1 tooth was the problem

 But the Xray revealed nothing

 SO HOW do you decide?

Well tapping with an instrument, they both were slightly uncomfortable..

Diagnostically, it's removing the temporary crown, placing a frozen instrument on the tooth remnant, and feeling and intense ZING and pain.

Tooth 1- PAIN, but it goes away

Tooth 2- PAIN, then the THROBBING continues..

I thought tooth 1 was the problem...so we repeated the test

 Kind of like DENTAL torture

 I promise to floss :-)

It turns out that the throbbing after freezing the tooth is pretty classic for diagnosing the tooth root infection

So tooth 2 had the root canal, and 12 hours later I already feel MUCH better

 ----------------------------
 Being the patient
 ----------------------------

But that freaking hurt, and although the dentist and staff are being understanding, I think they almost need to experience it to FULLY appreciate it

Which got me thinking about being in veterinary practice, and some of my diagnostic tests performed on dogs/cats

Such as repeated palpation of a sore knee

Or Placing the otoscope deep into a SORE ear

Putting the dental instrument at the base of the gum if I were suspecting a FORL ( type of cavity) in a cat

These are ALL very sore, and the problem in practice is that you are rushed, and get SO focused on the diagnosis.

I didn't always take time to imagine HOW it would feel.

 ---------------------------
 So what do I suggest?
 ---------------------------

Well you have got to ADVOCATE for your pet

IF you suspect the procedure being done in the room is uncomfortable, then SPEAK UP

 Ask questions

In nearly 20 years of practice, most people said virtually nothing

I also suggest that you at least start using some at home treatments.

Then YOU can be the 'gentle doctor'

Good for you, and your pet!
