Ever wondered what the breeds of your dog are?
Assuming you have a mixed breed of course...
--------------------- Dog DNA tests ---------------------
Do they work?
Depending on the lab, the answer is yes, especially now as testing has become more exact, and labs more reputable.
How does this work?
Research into the Dog Genome has been ongoing for several years. It began with a hope that a better understanding of the dog genome would help the fight against human cancer as it had been shown that there were many similarities between canine and human cancers. Completion of the Dog Genome Project in 2005 has enabled scientists to discover segments of the DNA molecule that produce differences between various breeds of dogs, such as the shape of the tail, size or color. Delcher, Mihai Pop, Wei Wang, Claire M. Fraser, and J. Craig Venter Science 26 September 2003 301: 1898-1903)
Where does the sample come from:
A swab from the inside of your dog's cheek
Can it tell if your dog is purebred:
No. The test is designed to compare against the common genomes of most common North American Dog Breeds- not exact individual breeds.
It can recognize about 97% of the dog DNA that is in the North American dog population according to historical trends in breed popularity.
P.S. I have 2 mixed breed dogs, and I am considering the tests- I would love to know what breeds they are...
I'll post results when they come.
