The FDA has reported 515 dogs developing a type of Heart Disease called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), linked to diet.
They reported that this was linked to 'Grain Free' Dog Food, primarily those containing, peas and other legumes..
If you have a dog on a 'Grain Free' Diet who is doing well, what should you do?
IF that is ALL you feed, then I would encourage you to change.
My own dog eats a 'Grain Free' Kibble now, but she gets a variety of food each week.
Homemade stew 1-2 times/week Raw 1-2 times/week Some canned and Some kibble
Don't just rely on the kibble to have that meet all your dog's nutritional needs.
Do you need to 'throw out' the grain free kibble and go back to 'grain based' kibble?
If your dog is doing well on a Grain Free Diet, I see no need to change it, unless you have a Golden Retriever or Cocker Spaniel, breeds that seem predisposed to developing DCM secondary to Diet.
Regardless...this is a confusing issue, and pet parents are getting some mixed advice.
In my upcoming webinar I am going to clear up the confusion, along with providing you a list of Legume Free Dog Kibble that may be less likely to trigger DCM. |
