Hi Friend,

Happy Earth Day to You and your pets!

I am taking my dogs for a walk with my sons class- we are then working on a community garden.

Can you be earth friendly with your pets?

Yes.

In fact if you were to think more like your pet, you'd be a lot more earth friendly..

1. Buy what you need, not what you want...you need food, water and shelter, not a new tablet

2. Careful Cleaning: Choose natural, non-toxic cleaning products. Make simple, natural cleaners with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and water

3. Eat locally. My cats would just as soon eat a mouse, than cat food..You likely won't be consuming mice, but you can find farmers’ markets, family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food near you..

4. Go organic- pesticide, herbicide, and TOXIC cleaner free. Both for health and environmental reasons..Those dandelions in your yard are a huge source of health benefits. Consider organic cleaning products like vinegar, borax, and baking soda.

5. Dog and cat poop.. Don't just throw it out, but compost it. Use bags that are biodegradable. But Pick it up. You can help reduce polluted storm water runoff by just picking up your pet's poop and dispose of it properly. Leaving pet waste on the ground increases public health risks by allowing harmful bacteria or organic material to wash into the storm drain and eventually into local waterbodies.

6. Share- my dogs are pretty good at sharing toys, balls, and even treats..We can all learn a tonne from this. Spend less, and help the environment by sharing things with your neighbors that you don't always use..like the lawn mower..

7. Recycle...Just about every pet and people product that you and I use can be recycled... collars and leashes upcycled from used bicycle inner tubes. Pet bowls recycled from post-consumer plastic #2 (HDPE / high-density polyethylene)..Products collars recycled from milk cartons, and West Paw Design cat toys recycled from plastic bottles. Beds, feeders, houses, and toy boxes upcycled from wine barrels. Collars upcycled from used neckties. Cat, rabbit, and ferret litter and small animal bedding made from recycled newspaper

Best Wishes,
